India versus England 4th Test 2nd Day: Match hangs in the balance
The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday.
It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the
wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli. Yadav
struck again to dismiss Malan with another good catch by Rohit Sharma to leave
England in big trouble at 62 for 5.
Ollie Pope survived few anxious moments against Bumrah and
Yadav. After the initial spell by both Indian bowlers, Bairstow and Pope took
the advantage of poor bowling by Siraj and Thakur. Umesh Yadav produced a good
delivery as Kohli decided to review the decision, but it remained not out due
to the ball missing the stumps.
Both England batsmen kept the pressure on Indian experienced bowlers.
Ravindra Jadeja was bought into the attack but Pope and Bairstow taking runs
with ease. Before the stroke of lunch break, Bumrah came to bowl troubling
Pope. England went into the lunch break at 139 for 5.
After the lunch break, Siraj and Jadeja started proceedings
as Bairstow, and Pope showed intent. India got much-needed breakthrough dismissing
Bairstow ending 89 runs for the 6th wicket. Moeen Ali came to the crease
keeping momentum for England along with Pope. Pope reached fifty off 92 balls.
Moeen Ali and Pope scored runs with ease putting pressure
back on Indian bowlers. Ravindra Jadeja got the breakthrough dismissing Ali who
tried to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Rohit Sharma. Moeen Ali and Pope
added 71 runs for the 7th wicket. Chris Woakes also scored runs with
ease putting Indian bowlers under some pressure. England ended the 2nd
session at 227 for 7.
The third session saw Woakes and Pope kept the scoreboard
ticking despite some tight bowling by Indian bowlers. Shardul Thakur got rid of
well-set Ollie Pope taking inside edge onto the stumps. Soon after, Jadeja
dismissed Ollie Robinson to release some pressure. Chris Woakes took most of
the strike and hit boundaries keeping England’s lead growing.
Indian captain Kohli decided to take the second new ball immediately.
Bumrah looked in pain but after some time delivered the rest of over. Woakes showed
intent completing his fifty off 58 balls. He was eventually run out while
trying to take a single off a bye. Woakes and Anderson added 35 runs for the
final wicket. England scored 290 runs in the first innings with a lead of 99
runs.
In their second innings, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul began off
brightly timing the ball well. Rory Burns dropped a tough chance to dismiss
Rohit. The Indian openers kept England fast bowlers at bay ending the 2nd
day at 43 for 0.
