IPL Match 42: Mumbai Indians beat Punjab Kings easily to stay alive in the tournament
Mumbai Indians showed their mettle as they registered an
important win over Punjab Kings played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium,
Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field
first. Mandeep Singh playing his first match of the season opened innings along
with KL Rahul. PBKS openers put pressure on MI bowlers with positive strokes.
Krunal Pandya struck for MI dismissing Mandeep Singh. Singh and Rahul added 36
runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, PBKS scored 38 for
1.
Kieron Pollard did the job for MI taking 2 big wickets of
Chris Gayle and KL Rahul to leave Punjab Kings in trouble. PBKS struggle continued
Pooran could not contribute many runs. At the end of the first timeout, Punjab
Kings made 50 for 4.
After the timeout, Aiden Markram steadied the ship for PBKS
along with Deepak Hooda. Markram and Hooda kept momentum keeping the scoreboard
ticking rotating the strike and hitting boundaries. Despite their efforts, MI
bowlers kept PBKS batting line-up under check. At the end of the 2nd
timeout, PBKS scored 90 for 4.
Rahul Chahar produced the magic dismissing a well-set Markrarm
who tried to sweep but was bowled. Markram and Hooda added 61 runs for the 5th
wicket. MI bowlers did not allow Deepak Hooda to score runs easily. PBKS could
only score 135 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 136 runs to win, it was a cautious start by Rohit
Sharma and Quinton de Kock. Ravi Bishnoi produced the magic getting rid of Rohit
with a simple catch to Mandeep Singh at mid-on and then grabbed Surya Kumar Yadav
to put Mumbai Indians under pressure. Saurabh Tiwary replacing Ishan Kishan put
some pressure on PBKS bowlers along with Quinton de Kock.
At the end of the first six overs, MI scored 30 for 2. After
the field restrictions, de Kock and Tiwary kept the scoreboard ticking. Both ensured
that MI ended the first timeout at 54 for 2.
De Kock and Tiwary looked in fine touch before Shami struck
to dismiss de Kock taking the inside edge onto the stumps. De Kock and Tiwary
added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Hardik Pandya was promoted taking
some time to settle. Harpreet Brar dropped a chance to get rid of Hardik.
A good low catch by KL Rahul ended the innings for Tiwary. After
settling in, Hardik Pandya smashed Shami for runs to keep MI ahead. Kieron
Pollard joined in the party hitting Arshdeep Singh.
With 16 runs required, Hardik Pandya did the job for Mumbai
Indians as Deepak Hooda was not able to give support for PBKS bowlers. Hardik
and Pollard put on unbeaten 45 runs for the 5th wicket to help MI
win the match by 6 wickets.
MI 137 for 4 in 19 overs (Tiwary 45, Hardik Pandya 40*,
Bishnoi 2/25) beat PBKS 135 for 6 in 20 overs (Markram 42, Deepak Hooda 28,
Kieron Pollard 2/8) by 6 wickets.
MI registered their 5th win of the tournament.
For his 2/8 in his 1 over, Kieron Pollard won the man of the match award.
