ICC World T20 Qualifiers Match 1: Oman starts the tournament with a commanding win over PNG
The hosts Oman started the ICC World T20 tournament with a resounding win over debutant Papua New Guinea played at Al Amerat Stadium, Muscat on Sunday.
Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Bilal Khan got rid of Tony
Ura taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Kaleemullah made it a brilliant start for
Oman as he dismissed Lega Siaka, in the same manner, to leave debutant PNG in
trouble. Charles Amini put some pressure on the Oman bowlers along with PNG
captain Asaad Vala with a flurry of boundaries.
Amini and Vala took the attack to Oman bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first six overs, PNG scored 40 for 2. Amini
survived a close LBW shout given not out but on review, it was retained due to the umpire’s
call. It was an aggressive batting display by both experienced PNG batsmen
keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and rotating the strike. Amini
and Vala looked in complete control making life tough for Oman bowlers. A
brilliant direct throw by Mohammad Nadeem resulted in the run-out of well-set
Amini. Amini and Vala added 81 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Asaad Vala picked up an injury but remained solid enough to hit
sixes off Zeeshan Masqood. Vala completed his fifty off 40 balls. It was a
remarkable comeback by Oman bowlers as they kept on picking wickets at regular
wickets. Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood grabbed 3 wickets in an over including
Norman Vanua, Sese Bau, and Kiplin Dorga to derail the PNG innings. Kabua Morea
and Pokana played the rest of 16 balls to help PNG post 129 for 9 in 20 overs.
Chasing 130 runs to win, Jatinder Singh and Aqib Ilyas began
off cautiously before taking on the attack to PNG bowlers. Oman openers kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and hitting singles. At the end of the first
six overs, Singh and Aqib scored 46 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Singh and Aqib upped the ante
putting PNG bowlers under pressure. Oman openers dominated making sure that
hosts make life easy for them. After the break, Singh showed his class and
completed fifty off 33 balls. On other hand, Aqib also looked composed hitting
boundaries with ease.
Aqib kept his composure and reached fifty off 43 balls.
Jatinder Singh hit the winning runs with a six to help register a dominating 10
wicket win.
Oman registered 2 important points who are along with
Bangladesh, Scotland, and PNG in Group B. For his 4 for 20 in 4 overs, Oman
captain Zeeshan Masqood was awarded the man of the match.
Oman 131 for 0 in 13.4 overs (Jatinder Singh 73*, Aqib 50*)
beat Papua New Guinea 129 for 9 in 20 overs ( Assad Vala 56, Amini 37, Zeeshan
Masqood 4/20, Bilal Khan 2/16) by 10 wickets.
