Indian women versus Australia women Pink Ball Test match day 2: Rain spoilsport after Smriti Mandhana’s century
It was another rain-affected day as the Indian team ended the 2nd
day in a strong position against Australia played at Carrara Oval, Gold Coast
on Friday.
Starting on the overnight score of 132 for 1, Smriti Mandhana
was given a reprieve as she was caught by Beth Mooney, but Perry overstepped.
After the chance, Mandhana showed intent and reached her maiden Test century
off 170 balls with a lovely boundary. On the other hand, Punam Raut looked
solid with the defense keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Mandhana made the batting look at ease helping the visitors
to go into a commanding position. She was not able to keep the shot down as McGrath
took a simple catch at short midwicket. Mandhana and Raut added 102 runs for the
2nd wicket. The Indian captain Mithali Raj came to the crease
looking edgy and was not able to rotate the strike properly.
The Australian bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not
allowing Indian batters to score runs easily. Punam Raut walked out as the
umpire did not give out resulting in appreciation from the dressing room. Meg
Lanning took 2nd new ball in the 81st over. Mithali Raj
and debutant Yastika Bhatia did the job brilliantly as the Indian team ended 1st
session at 231 for 3.
Mithali Raj started the second session with positive attitude
with boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Bhatia. Perry picked
her first wicket dismissing Bhatia taking the leading edge to Beth Mooney. Raj and
Bhatia added 44 runs for the 4th wicket. The Australian bowlers kept the pressure on the Indian batters with tight bowling.
Deepti Sharma looked comfortable but a brilliant direct
throw by Sutherland ended the innings for Mithali Raj to leave India in some
trouble. Taniya Bhatia and Sharma played cautiously before the rain arrived in
between the 2nd session.
Due to heavy rains and hailstorms, the umpires called off the
play. The Indian women’s team ended the 2nd day at 276 for 5. It is
going to be an uphill task for both teams to get a result out of it.
Indian women 276 for 5 in 101.5 overs ( Smriti Mandhana 127,
Raut 36, Molineux 2/28, Gardner 1/26)
Smriti Mandhana became the first Indian woman to score a Test century in Pink Ball Test
