IPL 2021 Eliminator: KKR knock out RCB with a close fought win
Kolkata Knight Riders held their nerves at the end as they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator of IPL 2021 played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Monday.
RCB captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. RCB openers Virat Kohli and Devdutt Paddikal provided a flying start against
Shivam Mavi hitting him for boundaries. It was an attacking display of cricket
as both put bad balls keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ferguson did the job for
KKR getting the wicket of Paddikal with good delivery. Paddikal and Kohli
added 49 runs to lay a strong foundation. Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 53
for 1 at the end of the first six overs. With that, the first timeout was called.
KKR captain Eoin Morgan bought in Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy
into the attack. KS Bharat struggled with his timing against disciplined bowling
by KKR bowlers. Narine struck to get rid of Bharat trying to increase the scoring
rate. Glenn Maxwell showed intent right from the word go and made life tough
for KKR bowlers. Narine did the job for KKR again dismissing RCB captain Virat
Kohli and then produced a peach to dismiss AB de Villiers. At the end of the
second timeout, RCB made 111 for 4.
Narine got his fourth wicket getting rid of Maxwell to make
life tough for RCB. It was a great bowling effort by KKR bowlers not allowing
RCB lower-order score runs. RCB could only post 138 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 139 runs to win, Shubman Gill and Venetaksh Iyer
provided a flying start to the KKR side taking on Garton with a flurry of
boundaries. Harshal Patel got a breakthrough for RCB dismissing Gill with a
slower delivery caught by AB de Villiers. Gill and Iyer added 41 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, KKR made 48 for 1. With
that, the first timeout was called.
After the timeout, Chahal got rid of Rahul Tripathi via
review for LBW. The umpire gave it not out and on review, it was overturned to
out to bring back RCB into the game. Nitish Rana took the attack on Glenn
Maxwell putting pressure back on the opposition. Shahbaz Ahmed dropped a chance off
Iyer to dent RCB's chances.
Harshal Patel was bought back into the attack and got rid of
Iyer with a tickle down the leg caught by Bharat. Sunil Narine changed the course of
the game with 3 sixes in an over-off Daniel Christian to make life easier for
KKR. Chahal was simply sensational getting rid of the wicket of Nitish Rana caught
by AB de Villiers at long-off to end 31 runs partnership for the 4th
wicket. At the end of the 2nd timeout, KKR scored 112 for 4. RCB
fielding was not great as Paddikal dropped to dismiss Narine.
After the timeout, Siraj showed great courage dismissing
Sunil Narine's clean bowled and then Dinesh Karthik with a low catch by KS
Bharat. Garton produced a superb 19th over to make the equation 7
runs required off the last over.
Shakib AL Hasan delivered the goods with a lovely shot to
make an equation in favor of KKR. KKR held their nerves as they registered a win by
4 wickets with 2 balls spare.
KKR 139 for 6 in 19.4 overs ( Gill 29, Narine 26, Chahal
2/16, Siraj 2/19) beat RCB 138 for 7 in 20 overs ( Kohli 39, Paddikal 21,
Narine 4/21, Ferguson 2/30) by 4 wickets.
For his 4 for 21 and 26 off 15 balls, Sunil Narine was
awarded the man of the match.
