IPL 2021 Match 48: RCB through the playoffs with all-round performance
Royal Challengers Bangalore showed their class as they entered
the playoffs stage with a close-fought win over Punjab Kings in the 48th
match of IPL 2021 played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Sunday.
RCB captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was an aggressive start by Devdutt Paddikal taking on Arshdeep Singh
hitting boundaries with ease. Virat Kohli also looked good taking on Punjab
Kings bowlers. Punjab Kings missed two golden opportunities dismissing RCB
captain Kohli once stumping, and one dropped catch. In a major controversy,
Paddikal was given not out by the umpire but on the spike, there was an edge.
Despite that edge, the third umpire retained the decision.
Both RCB openers showed great intent and put pressure on
Punjab Kings bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, RCB raced to 55 for 0.
With that, the first timeout was called.
KL Rahul decided to bring Harpreet Brar into the attack and
bowled brilliantly with accurate lines. Moises Henriques kept the pressure on both
RCB openers. Henriques dismissed Kohli and Daniel Christian off successive
deliveries. Kohli and Paddikal added 68 runs for the opening wicket.
Henriques struck again to get rid of Paddikal with a lovely
catch by KL Rahul. Glenn Maxwell came to the crease and took on Ravi Bishnoi
hitting him for big sixes to keep pressure on Punjab Kings bowlers. On the other
hand, AB de Villiers took few balls for settling in. At the end of the 2nd
timeout, RCB scored 115 for 3.
After the timeout, Maxwell looked in cracking form taking on
Punjab Kings bowlers while AB de Villiers joined in the party taking on
Arshdeep Singh. A brilliant direct hit by Sarfaraz Khan resulted in the wicket
of de Villiers. Maxwell and de Villiers added 73 runs for the 4th
wicket. Maxwell reached his fifty off just 29 balls. Mohammed Shami bowled a
brilliant last over taking wickets of Maxwell, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Garton. At the
end of the 20 overs, RCB scored 164 for 7.
Chasing 165 runs to win, it was a cautious start by KL Rahul
and Mayank Agarwal. KL Rahul was given out by the umpire but on review, the
decision was overturned to not out due to inside edge. Punjab Kings openers took the attack to RCB bowlers putting pressure on them. At the end of the first six
overs, Rahul and Mayank scored 49 for 0. With that, the first timeout was
called.
After the timeout, Mayank Agarwal upped the ante with
brilliant strokes keeping the momentum for Punjab Kings. Shahbaz Ahmed struck
for RCB getting rid of KL Rahul taking outside edge to Harshal Patel at short
third man. Rahul and Mayank added 91 runs for the opening wicket.
Nicholas Pooran's struggle continued as he was dismissed by
Chahal providing a simple catch to Paddikal. Chahal bowled with control and did
not allow Punjab Kings batsmen to score runs easily. At the end of the 2nd
timeout, Punjab Kings reached 102 for 2.
Mayank Agarwal reached his fifty off 36 balls and was the
key batsman at the crease. Chahal dismissed Mayank and Sarfaraz Khan in the same over
to dent the Punjab Kings chase. Garton got rid of Aiden Markram making PBKS matter
worst.
Sharukh Khan provided some chance with lusty blows off Siraj
and Harshal Patel. With 19 runs required from the final over, trying to take the
strike, Sharukh Khan was run out. Henriques tried his best to take PBKS home,
but it was not enough for PBKS to win the match.
RCB 164 for 7 in 20 overs ( Maxwell 57, Paddikal 40,
Henriques 3/12, Shami 3/39) beat PBKS 158 for 6 in 20 overs ( Agarwal 57, KL Rahul
39, Chahal 3/29) by 6 runs.
For his 57 off 32 balls, Glenn Maxwell was awarded the man
of the match award. With this win, RCB moves up to 16 points.
