IPL 2021 Match 53: KL Rahul’s brilliance takes Punjab Kings to a big win over CSK

 Thanks to a disciplined bowling effort and captain knock by KL Rahul, Punjab Kings registered a big win over Chennai Super Kings in their last league match played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday.

Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to field first. Mohammed Shami bowled with accuracy not allowing Faf du Plessis and Gaikwad to score runs easily. Soon after, Punjab Kings bowlers kept tight lines making life tough for CSK openers. Arshdeep Singh provided the breakthrough for PBKS with a shorter delivery that Gaikwad did not control and was caught by Sharukh Khan.

Arshdeep Singh bowled with accuracy and made life tough for CSK batsmen. Singh got the 2nd wicket with a good delivery to dismiss Moeen Ali. At the end of the first six overs, CSK looked in trouble at 30 for 2.

Chris Jordan coming into the playing XI got two big wickets of Robin Uthappa with a lovely catch by Brar and then got the wicket of Rayudu with another good catch by Arshdeep Singh to leave CSK in big trouble. At the end of the first timeout, CSK made 42 for 4.

After the timeout, Punjab Kings bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing CSK batsmen to score runs easily. Ravi Bishnoi got rid of CSK captain MS Dhoni taking inside edge onto the stumps. Faf du Plessis looked cautious and kept ticking the scoreboard. CSK ended 2nd timeout at 86 for 5.

After the timeout, du Plessis upped the ante and kept momentum for CSK with a flurry of boundaries. On other hand, Jadeja was not able to time the ball. Du Plessis reached his fifty off 46 balls and then kept hitting boundaries with ease. After being belted for runs, Shami got the wicket of du Plessis as KL Rahul took a simple catch. Du Plessis and Jadeja added 67 runs for the 6th wicket. Despite Dwayne Bravo hitting the boundary, CSK posted just 134 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 135 runs to win, KL Rahul looked in sublime form taking on Deepak Chahar and Josh Hazlewood hitting boundaries with ease. Shardul Thakur provided the much-needed breakthrough for CSK dismissing Mayank Agarwal given out. Soon after, Sarfaraz Khan was also dismissed cheaply taking leading edge to Faf du Plessis. PBKS openers added 46 runs laying a strong foundation. At the end of the first six overs, CSK scored 51 for 2.

After the field restrictions, KL Rahul kept on the momentum for PBKS hitting boundaries at will and made life tough for CSK bowlers. Shahrukh also went cheaply being dismissed off Deepak Chahar caught at long-on. Rahul kept hitting boundaries reaching half-century in 25 balls. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS scored 80 for 3.

After the timeout, KL Rahul continued to dominate the CSK bowlers with innovative strokes.  Shardul Thakur got his third wicket getting rid of Markram. Rahul and Markram added 46 runs for the 4th wicket. KL Rahul hit the winning runs with a six to help PBKS register 6 wickets win.

PBKS 139 for 4 in 13 overs ( KL Rahul 98*, Shardul Thakur 3/28) beat CSK 134 for 6 in 20 overs ( du Plessis 76, Jadeja 15*, Chris Jordan 2/20, Arshdeep Singh 2/35) by 6 wickets.

For his 98 not out off 42 balls and 2 catches, KL Rahul was named the man of the match award. PBKS ended the IPL 14 with 12 points.
