IPL 2021 Match 54: KKR thrash Rajasthan Royals to qualify for the playoffs
Kolkata Knight Riders produced a dominating display to outplay Rajasthan Royals in a one-sided encounter played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Friday.
RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to field
first. It was a steady start by KKR openers Venetaksh Iyer and Shubman Gill putting
RR bowlers under pressure. Both openers kept the scoreboard ticking. At the end
of the first six overs, KKR scored 34 for 0.
Gill and Iyer looked in control making life tough for RR
bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, KKR scored 44 for 0. KKR openers upped
the ante keeping the pressure on RR bowlers and maintained the momentum. Rahul
Tewaita dismissed Iyer giving RR a breakthrough. Iyer and Gill added 79 runs for
the opening wicket.
Glenn Phillips dismissed Nitish Rana after being smashed for
quickfire runs. Gill began to up the ante and keep the scoreboard ticking along
with Rahul Tripathi. At the end of the 2nd timeout, KKR scored 119
for 2.
After the timeout, Gill looked confident and completed a half-century off 40 balls. Chris Morris got rid of dangerous Gill as
Jaiswal took a good catch. Gill and Tripathi added 41 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Rahul Tripathi also went after playing a quickfire cameo. Eoin Morgan and
Dinesh Karthik played quickfire cameos to help KKR post the highest total in
Sharjah of 171 for 4 in 20 overs.
Chasing 172 runs to win, it was a horrible start for RR the
top order fell like nine pins with Jaiswal, Samson, Livingstone, and Anuj Rawat
in quick succession. The RR batsmen did not learn from their mistakes keeping
playing cross-batted shots. At the end of the first six overs, RR looked in
deep trouble at 17 for 4.
Shivam Dube tried his best to hit boundaries, but KKR
bowlers did not allow them to hit runs. Shivam Mavi struck to get the wicket of
Dube. At the end of the first timeout, RR made 33 for 5.
KKR bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals and
made life tough for RR batsmen. Rahul Tewaita was the only RR batsmen to
provide some resistance. Jaydev Unadkat looked compact with his technique. Tewaita
did not give strike to Chetan Sakaryia hitting boundaries keeping RR's pride in
check.
Sakaryia was run out in an attempt to take the second run out
with a good throw by Shakib AL Hasan. At the end of the 2nd timeout,
RR reached 85 for 9. Shivam Mavi got the wicket of Tewaita with inside edge to
bowl out RR for 85.
KKR 171 for 4 in 20 overs (Gill 56, Iyer 38, Chetan Sakaryia
1/23) beat RR 85 in 16.1 overs ( Rahul Tewaita 44, Shivam Mavi 4/21, Ferguson
3/18) by 86 runs.
For his 4 for 21 in 3.1 overs, Shivam Mavi was awarded the
man of the match. KKR has almost qualified for the playoffs stage as MI needs to win by 171 runs against SRH.
