IPL Match 45: PBKS stay alive with a thrilling win

 

It was another brilliant game of cricket that went right down the wire as Punjab Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in a thriller played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Friday.

PBKS captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for PBKS as Arshdeep Singh got rid of Shubman Gill taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Venetaksh Iyer and Rahul Tripathi showed intent right from word go putting PBKS bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, KKR made 48 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Tripathi and Iyer kept on ticking the scoreboard putting with singles and hitting occasional boundaries. KKR made 73 for 1 at end of 1st timeout.

Iyer looked in sensational form along with Tripathi keeping the KKR scoreboard ticking. Both did not allow any PBKS to settle with their innovative strokes. Iyer reached his fifty off 39 balls while Tripathi kept the momentum for KKR. Ravi Bishnoi provided the breakthrough for PBKS dismissing Tripathi providing an easy catch to Deepak Hooda at deep midwicket. Tripathi and Iyer added 72 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Nitish Rana joined in with Iyer and kept the momentum for KKR. Bishnoi struck for PBKS getting rid of Iyer who tried to hit a boundary but was caught by Hooda at the boundary. Iyer and Rana added 30 runs for the 3rd wicket. At the end of the 2nd timeout, KKR scored 121 for 3.

Eoin Morgan’s poor form continued as he was dismissed LBW while going across the stumps. Nitish Rana looked in brilliant touch taking on Nathan Ellis and Arshdeep Singh. It was a brilliant bowling effort by PBKS bowlers, especially by Mohammed Shami and Singh. After playing a blinder, Nitish Rana was caught by Mayank Agarwal. A brilliant direct hit by Mohammed Shami in the follow-through resulted in the wicket of Tim Seifert. Dinesh Karthik was cleaned bowled off final delivery as PBKS restricted PBKS to 165 for 7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 166 runs to win, Mayank Agarwal looked in brilliant touch right from the word go putting KKR bowlers under pressure. He was given a reprieve by Eoin Morgan after that Agarwal took advantage of it. At the end of the first six overs, PBKS raced away to 46 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.

After the timeout, PBKS openers kept the momentum taking singles and hitting boundaries. A good catch by Morgan resulted in the wicket of Agarwal. Agarwal and Rahul added 70 runs for the opening wicket. Nicolas Pooran could not do justice as he fell while trying to another big shot providing an easy catch to Shivam Mavi.

PBKS captain KL Rahul showed his class and made life tough for KKR. Aiden Markram gave most of the strike to Rahul. At the end of the 2nd timeout, PBKS scored 109 for 2.

After the timeout, KL Rahul completed his fifty off 43 balls and kept PBKS under control. Markram was caught by Gill at the boundary to give some hopes of KKR coming back into the game. Markram and Rahul added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Deepak Hooda’s poor form continued with a simple catch to Rahul Tripathi.

KKR fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped catches. Venkatesh Iyer could not grab a catch at the boundary off Shahrukh Khan. After seeing many angles, KL Rahul was given not out as Tripathi took a superb catch.

With 5 runs required off 6 balls, KL Rahul was caught by Shivam Mavi. Rahul Tripathi could not grab the catch as Shahrukh Khan hit the winning runs to help PBKS win the match by 5 wickets.

PBKS 168 for 5 in 19.3 overs (KL Rahul 67, Mayank Agarwal 40, Varun Chakravarthy 2/24) beat KKR 165 for 7 in 20 overs ( Iyer 67, Tripathi 34, Arshdeep Singh 3/32) by 5 wickets.

With this win, PBKS move up to the fifth position. For his 67 off 55 balls, KL Rahul was named the man of the match award.
