IPL Match 46: Shreyas Iyer ensures Delhi Capitals dent Mumbai Indians chances

It was a close-fought match as Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians in low scoring thriller played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Saturday.

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to field first. Rohit Sharma started the innings with a cracking boundary before Avesh Khan dismissed with a sharp bouncer resulted in a catch to Rabada at third man. Quinton de Kock and Surya Kumar Yadav showed intent in putting the bad balls away for boundaries making life tough for DC bowlers. Surya Kumar played Ashwin brilliantly keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first six overs, Mumbai Indians scored 35 for 1.

Soon after the field restrictions, Axar Patel got rid of de Kock trying to cut providing an easy catch to Nortje. Surya Kumar Yadav looked in fine touch keeping the scoreboard ticking and making life tough for DC bowlers. Mumbai Indians scored 57 for 2 at end of the first timeout.

After the timeout, Surya looked comfortable keeping the scoreboard ticking. On the other hand, Tiwary struggled to time the ball. His promising innings came to an end as he hit a full toss delivery straight into the hands of Rabada at long-on. Surya and Tiwary added 31 runs for the 3rd wicket. DC bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing MI batsmen to score runs easily. Axar struck again dismissing Tiwary trying to hit a big shot. Nortje got rid of Kieron Pollard taking the inside edge onto the stumps leaving MI in big trouble at 87 for 5.

Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya struggled to time the ball against good quality bowling by DC bowlers. At the end of the 2nd timeout, MI scored 88 for 5. After the timeout, it was a superb bowling effort by Avesh Khan producing a brilliant yorker to dismiss Hardik Pandya and then got rid of Nathan Coulter Nile. Jayant Yadav provided some impetus with an 11 off 4 balls cameo. It was a great bowling effort by DC bowlers to restrict MI for a modest total of 129 for 8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 130 runs to win, it was a decent start by DC openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shaw. A brilliant pickup direct throw by Kieron Pollard resulted in the wicket of Dhawan. Soon after, Krunal Pandya dismissed Prithvi Shaw via a review. The umpire called it not out and on review, it was overturned to out putting the DC team under pressure.

Steve Smith walked across and was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah to leave Delhi Capitals in trouble at 30 for 3. DC captain Pant put the pressure on MI bowlers with risky strokes. At the end of the first six overs, DC made 46 for 3.

Pant tried to play some rash strokes but eventually was caught at the boundary by Hardik Pandya at long-off. With that wicket, Delhi Capitals ended the first timeout with the scoreboard reading 57 for 4.

Axar Patel was promoted ahead of Hetymer but could not do anything as Boult dismissed him. Patel decided to review the decision and it was retained to out. Shimron Hetymer provided some impetus with attacking strokes. At the end of the 2nd timeout, DC scored 93 for 5.

Soon after the timeout, Bumrah struck to dismiss Hetymer leaving Delhi Capitals in trouble. With the required run-rate under control, Ashwin and Iyer kept on ticking the scoreboard ticking. R Ashwin hit the winning runs with a six to help Delhi Capitals register a 4-wicket win.
