Uber Cup 2021: Indian women’s team start on a winning note

 The Indian women’s team started the 2021 Uber Cup on a winning note against Spain in Group B played at Ceres Court Arena 1, Aarhus on Sunday.

In the opening match of the tie, Saina Nehwal retired midway against Clara Azurmendi. It was a close-fought game as both players fought for each point. At the mid-game interval, Clara had a slender led. After the break, the match went right down the wire before Clara won the first game at 22-20. Due to a groin injury, Saina retried midway.

Malvika Bansod made it level for India with a commanding win over Beatriz Corrales in two straight games. The Indian dominated right from the word go making life tough for the opponent winning it by 21-13, 21-15. Bansod looked confident and made the opponent run around.

The young doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Rutaparna Panda proved too much for her opponent winning in straight games against Paula Lopez and Lorena Usle. Crasto and Panda made it tough putting them under pressure right from the word go winning it 21-10, 21-8 to give India a 2-1 lead.

Another young shuttler Aditi Bhatt defeated Ania Setein in two straight games. Aditi looked in complete control right from word go and made life tough for her opponent.  Ania showed little glimpses but the Indian shuttler won it by 21-16, 21-14 to help India win the tie 3-1.

The experienced Indian pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to Clara Azurmendi and Beatriz Corrales in a thrilling 3 setter. Both pairs fought for each point right from the word go but the Indian held their nerves to win the first set at 21-18.

In the next two games, the Indian pair committed lots of mistakes as the Spain pair showed courage winning it by 14-21, 17-21. Despite Ponnappa and Reddy losing the final game, India won the tie at 3-2.
