Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021/22 Pre quarterfinals
The Pre-quarterfinals matches took place in Delhi today. Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bengal, Hyderabad, Rajasthan finished top of the points table and qualified for the quarterfinals directly.
Vidarbha versus Maharashtra
Vidarbha stunned experienced Maharashtra side in the first
pre-quarterfinals match played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Vidarbha
captain Akshay Wadkar won the toss and decided to field first. It was a perfect
start as Yash Thakur trapped Naushad Sheikh in front of stumps without opening
his account.
Rahul Tripathi took the attack to Vidarbha bowlers taking on
the spinners and pacers. Yash Nahar played with intent putting opposition
bowlers under immense pressure. At the end of the first six overs, Maharashtra scored
57 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Tripathi and Nahar kept the
pressure on Vidarbha bowlers. Karnewar struck getting rid of dangerous Nahar
trying to clear the boundary caught by Lalit Yadav at long-off. Tripathi and Nahar
added 64 runs for the 2nd wicket. Tripathi made his intentions clear
reaching his fifty off 33 balls. Karnewar dismissed experienced batter Kedar
Jadhav bowled to leave Maharashtra struggling a little bit.
Tripathi continued to put Vidarbha bowlers under pressure, but
Kazi could not hit big shots. Wakhare got rid of well-set Tripathi with a bad delivery
caught by Sharma. Vidarbha bowlers never let Maharashtra batters score runs
easily kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Yash Thakur grabbed 2 wickets
in the same over getting Ranjeet Nikam and Divyang Hingekar. It was a great
bowling effort to restrict Maharashtra at 157 for 8 in 20 overs.
It was not an ideal start for Vidarbha as Siddarth Wath was cleaned
up by Mukesh Chaudhary in the first over itself. Atharva Taide looked in
sublime touch along with captain Akshay Wadkar. Both batters put pressure on Maharashtra
bowlers hitting them for boundaries. At the end of the first six overs,
Vidarbha posted 50 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Taide and Wadkar kept the
pressure on Maharashtra bowlers. Taide kept his calm reaching fifty off 30
balls. Kazi got rid of the well-set Taide caught by Nikam. Taide and Wadkar added
96 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Dubey took the attack to Maharashtra bowlers keeping the momentum
going on. On the other hand, Wadkar completed his fifty off 41 balls. Palkar
dismissed dangerous Dubey caught by Shaikh. Dubey and Wadkar added 32 runs for
the 3rd wicket. Jitesh Sharma did the job for Vidarbha hitting 1
four and 3 successive sixes to help Vidarbha register a commanding 7 wicket
win.
Vidarbha 160 for 3 in 17.5 overs ( Wadkar 58*, Taide 56,
Mukesh Chaudhary 1/24) beat Maharashtra 157 for 8 in 20 overs ( Rahul Tripathi
66, Yash Thakur 3/17) by 7 wickets.
Karnataka versus Saurashtra
Karnataka held their nerves to defeat Saurashtra in the
second pre-quarterfinals played at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi.
Saurashtra captain Jaydev Unadkat won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as they lost 2 early wickets of
Himalaya Brad and Vishvraj Jadeja. Karnataka bowlers kept it tight not allowing
Saurashtra batters to score runs easily. Sheldon Jackson and Arpit Vasavada
took the attack to the opposition. At the end of the first six overs, Saurashtra
made 32 for 2.
After the restrictions, Cariappa and Suchith controlled the
scoring. Cariappa struck getting rid of Vasavada caught by Patil. Jackson and
Vasavada added 39 runs for the 3rd wicket. Prerek Mankad looked in
great touch taking on Karnataka bowlers. It was a good batting display by both Mankad
and Jackson before Mankad was caught by Sharath. Mankad and Jackson added 59
runs for the 4th wicket.
Jackson completed his fifty off 42 balls and was eventually
dismissed the very next ball. Karnataka bowlers kept on taking wickets at regular intervals.
Samarth Vyas and Chirag Jani hit some vital runs in the final over to help Saurashtra
post 145 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 146 runs to win, BS Sharath and experienced Manish
Pandey fell cheaply as Jaydev Unadkat took their wickets. Rohan Kadam looked in
brilliant touch keeping the pressure on Saurashtra bowlers. Karun Nair also
could not contribute many runs being dismissed for just 4. At the end of the
first six overs, Karnataka scored 36 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Manohar looked a little cautious
at the start while Kadam kept his calm. Kadam was run-out at the non-striker end as
it hit the hand of Jani to leave Karnataka in trouble. Manohar upped the ante
taking on D Jadeja keeping pressure on Saurashtra bowlers. Aniruddha Joshi
struggled to time the ball while Manohar showed his intent. Unadkat got the
breakthrough getting the wicket of Joshi. Joshi and Manohar added 64 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Manohar looked in great touch reaching his fifty in his
debut match off 35 balls. Unadkat struck in the same over grabbing the wicket
of Suchith. With 5 runs required, Manohar hit a six to help Karnataka register
a thrilling 2 wicket win.
Karnataka 150 for 8 in 19.5 overs (Manohar 70*, Kadam 33, Unadkat
4/22) beat Saurashtra 145 for 7 in 20 overs (Jackson 50, Vyshak 2/19, Cariappa
2/23) by 2 wickets.
Himachal Pradesh versus Kerala
A strong Kerala side cruised past to a commanding win over Himachal
Pradesh in the 3rd pre-quarterfinals match at Palam Ground, New Delhi.
Kerala captain Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to field first.
It was an ideal start as Manukrishnan got rid of Ankush
Bains. Prashant Chopra looked in brilliant touch hitting boundaries at will.
Akhil dismissed Chopra ending 45 runs stand for the 2nd wicket. Nikhil
Gangta also fell cheaply as Kerala kept the pressure on HP batters.
Raghav Dhawan was the lone warrior for Himachal Pradesh scoring
65 runs. Despite his efforts, Himachal Pradesh could only score 145 for 6 in 20
overs.
Chasing 146 runs to win, it was a decent start by Rohan
Kunnummal and Azharudden. Jamwal got rid of Rohan as Kerala openers put on 34
runs. Samson looked in fine touch putting the bad balls away for boundaries. Azharudden
and Samson put Kerala under complete control hitting half-centuries. Azharudden
was dismissed for a well-made 60.
Azharudden and Samson put on 98 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Sachin Baby and Samson did the job as Kerala won by 8 wickets with 3 balls
to spare.
Kerala 147 for 2 in 19.3 overs ( Azharudden 60, Samson 52*,
Jamwal 1/21) beat Himachal Pradesh 145 for 6 in 20 overs ( Raghav Dhawan 65,
Chopra 36, Midhun 2/26) by 8 wickets.
