BWF World Championship Day 3: Indian shuttlers progress into next round

 It was a superb day for the Indian shuttlers as most of them made it into the next round of the BWF World Championship 2021 played at Carolina Marin Stadium, Huelva, Spain on Tuesday.

Lakshya Sen stunned higher-ranked Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in a thrilling three games. Both players started the match with long rallies as the Japanese took the initial lead before Sen put pressure on Nishimoto. The Indian showed great fighting spirit to comeback equalling the scores at 10-10. At the mid-game interval, Nishimoto had a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, the match ebbed and flow as both players fought for each point. Sen took a 20-18 lead before losing 2 points before taking the next 2 points to win the first game by 22-20.

The second game began off brilliantly with both players taking alternate points. Nishimoto played aggressive badminton putting Sen under pressure. Again, there were long rallies but Sen looked tired. At the mid-game interval, Nishimoto took an 11-10 lead. After the break, the Japanese player put Sen's defense under pressure and won the second game easily at 21-15.

It was another superb display of brilliant badminton in the 3rd game also as both players fought for each point. The match ebbed and flowed again with Sen taking lead before Nishimoto leveled the score at 10-10. At the mid-game interval, the Indian took a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, Sen showed the great defensive technique to put Nishimoto under pressure. Nishimoto hit shuttle out as the Indian won the match by 21-18 moving into the round of 16.  He will face Kevin Cordon of Guatemala.

The defending Champions PV Sindhu cruised into the pre-quarterfinals with a straight-game win over Martina Repiksa of Slovakia at Court number 3 . It was a dominating performance by the Indian as she kept the pressure on the opponent right from the word go. At the mid-game interval, Sindhu led 11-4. After the break, the Indian maintained her domination winning the first game easily at 21-7.

PV Sindhu looked in complete control during the 2nd game also winning it by 21-9 to move into the next round. She will face the winner of Chocuwong of Thailand. 

Kidambi Srikanth proved his experience by winning against Li Sheng Feng of China in three thrilling games at Court number 2. The Chinese had a decent start putting the Indian under pressure. Srikanth committed a few unforced errors as Sheng won the first game easily at 21-15.

Srikanth looked out of sorts initially but upped the pace and took successive points to lead 11-9 at the interval. After the mid-game interval, former number 1 committed a few more unforced errors but held his nerves to win the 2nd game at 21-18.

The third and deciding game was a close-fought affair as Srikanth put the pressure right from word go against Chinese. Indian upped the game before winning the decider at 21-17. Srikanth will face the winner of Lu Guang Zu in the third round.

Men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Jhe Huei and Yang Po Hsuan of Chinese Taipei in two straight games. It was a close-fought affair as the Indian pair took the lead at the mid-game interval and had a 20-17 lead before allowing their opponents to take four points in succession. The Indian pair did well to win the first game at 27-25.

After 13-13 in the second game, the Indian pair played with an attacking approach to take the lead and eventually won it by 21-17. They will face the winners of Ong Yiew Sin and Teo of Malaysia in pre-quarters.
