BWF World Tour Finals Day 1: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth make winning starts

 Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu made winning starts to the prestigious BWF World Tour finals played at Bali, Indonesia on Wednesday.

Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to Japan Nami Matsuyama and Shida in Group B match of Japan in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by the Japanese pair in the first game-winning it 21-14. Despite giving some tough fight during the 2nd game, Nami and Matsuyama won it 21-18. They will now face Gabriela Steova and Stefani Stevoa of Bulgaria in do or die match tomorrow. Stevoa Sisters won their opening match against Chole Birch and Lauren Smith in two straight games 21-12, 21-11.

The men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty lost to Kim Astrup and Rasmussen of Denmark in a Group A match. It was an aggressive start by both pairs as they took alternate points. At the mid-game interval, the Denmark pair took a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, both pairs took alternate points before Astrup and Rasmussen put pressure on the Indian pair winning by 21-16. It was a dominating display by the Danish pair in the second game not allowing Reddy and Chirag to comeback into the match taking a commanding 11-2 lead at the interval. After the break, the Danish pair played brilliant badminton to win the second game easily by 21-5. The Indian pair will take on Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya.

Kidambi Srikanth started their BWF World Tour finals journey with dominating straight games win over Tomas Junior Popov of France. Both players started the game on even keel till 5-5. After that, the Indian produced some superb badminton with smashes and put the French player under pressure. Srikanth took an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Indian dominated Popov and took points in succession to win the first game easily by 21-14.

In the initial stages of the second game, Popov put pressure on Srikanth with smashes taking a 6-4 lead. The Indian made a strong comeback into the match keeping the momentum going At the mid-game interval, Srikanth led 11-9. After the break, despite Popov’s effort, Srikanth won the second game easily by 21-16. He will face Vitisdarn of Thailand tomorrow.

PV Sindhu proved too much for Line Christophen of Denmark in the Group A match. It was a good start by Sindhu playing attacking shots putting Line under pressure. The Indian committed few unforced errors before coming back with vengeance taking an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the mid-game break, Sindhu never looked back and won the first game easily by 21-13.

The second game saw fewer mistakes by Sindhu as she kept the pressure on the opposition. At the mid-game interval, the Indian took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Line showed some courage leveling scores at 13-13. After that, Sindhu kept the pressure on the opposition winning the second game easily by 21-16. She will now face Yvonne Li of Germany tomorrow.

Axselen qualified for the semi-finals as his opponent retired with a scoreline at 5-1 in favor of Denmark's player. Lakshya Sen also progressed as Momota retired hurt with a score of 1-1. Sen and Axselen will play each other tomorrow.
