Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021: India trounces Pakistan to reach semi-finals
The Indian men’s hockey team registered their 2nd win of the tournament with a thrilling win over arch-rivals Pakistan played at Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium, Dhaka on Friday.
It was not an ideal start for the Indian team as Akashdeep
Singh was awarded a green card. India dominated the opposition keeping momentum
with great attacking skills but Pakistan's defense was solid. Harmanpreet Singh
scored from a penalty corner in the 9th minute to give India a 1-0
lead. India kept the attacking going putting enough pressure on Pakistan's
defense. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.
The second quarter saw both teams making attacking moves but the defense remained solid enough. Despite a few attacks, it was a solid display as
India did not concede any goals while Pakistan was not able to penetrate
anything. At the end of the 1st half, India still led 1-0. Nilam
Sanjeep had to sit out for 2 minutes due to the green card awarded.
Indian team started the 3rd quarter on an aggressive note-making move but could not convert chances. Akashdeep Singh
converted a goal from a brilliant pass in the 42nd minute to give India a 2-0 lead. Pakistan pulled one goal back as Junaid scored in the 43rd
minute as the Indian goalkeeper could not keep the shot away. At the end of the 3rd
quarter, India still led 2-1.
Pakistan was awarded a penalty corner in the initial stages
of the 4th quarter, but India decided to review the decision and it was
retained. Soon after, Pakistan earned a penalty corner was Suraj produced a
superb save to deny the arch-rivals the leveler. Harmanpreet Singh scored his
2nd goal of the match with a brilliant penalty corner in the 53rd
minute to give India a 3-1 lead. Pakistan tried to convert the chances, but the Indian defense remained.
The Indian team registered their 2nd win of the
tournament and are currently on 7 points. They play their last league match on
Sunday against Japan.
