India versus South Africa 2nd Test 2nd Day: Honours even on day 2
It was another thrilling day for cricket fans as both teams fought it out on the 2nd day of the 2nd Test match played at Wanders, Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Starting on the overnight score of 35 for 1, it was a cautious
start by Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen against top-quality bowling against
Shami and Bumrah. The Indian team could have got the breakthrough as Dean Elgar's
soft signal was given out but on review decision changed due to ball hitting
ground. Keegan Petersen played with intent putting bad deliveries away for
boundaries. KL Rahul decided to bring bowling changes, but Elgar and Petersen remained
calm.
Shardul Thakur was bought into the attack and got rid of South
African captain Elgar with a simple catch to Pant. Elgar and Petersen added 74
runs for the 2nd wicket. Petersen showed positive intent to complete
his maiden Test fifty off 103 deliveries. Thakur struck again to dismiss
Petersen with a lovely catch by Mayank Agarwal to bring back India into the
match. Rassie van der Dussen was given out by the umpire but on review it was
overturned to not out. Right at the stroke of lunch break, Thakur produced
another superb delivery to get rid of Dussen caught by Pant. South Africa
reached 102 for 4.
After the lunch break, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verryne played
with intent putting the pressure right back on Indian team. Both kept the good deliveries
on solid defense but made sure scored runs with positive intent. Shardul Thakur
was given the responsibility to break partnership dismissing Kyle Verryne with
a beauty. Bavuma and Verryne added 60 runs for the 5th wicket. Temba
Bavuma reached his fifty off 59 balls with aggressive intent.
Thakur struck again to dismiss Bavuma caught down the leg bringing
back India into the match. Shami dismissed Kagiso Rabada without opening his
account caught by Siraj. Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen kept looked solid
enough ending 2nd session at 191 for 7.
The third session saw Shardul Thakur troubling Jansen with uneven
bounce hitting on the chest and body. Jansen and Maharaj put pressure back on
Indian bowlers hitting runs. Bumrah got rid of Maharaj with a stunning delivery.
Jansen and Maharaj added 38 runs for the 8th wicket. Duanne Oliver was
hit on the arm but remained solid enough. Shardul Thakur struck twice in the same
over to Jansen and Lungi Ngidi ending the South African innings on 229 with a
slender lead of 27 runs.
Mayank Agarwal looked in great touch hitting the bad
deliveries away for boundaries while KL Rahul remained solid enough. Jansen
struck for South Africa dismissing KL Rahul caught by Aiden Markrarm. Cheteshwar
Pujara looked in aggressive mood putting pressure on South African bowlers.
Oliver got rid of Mayank Agarwal with a lovely delivery to give South Africa hope. The experienced pair of Pujara and Rahane remained solid enough ending the 2nd day at 85 for 2. Both added so far 41runs for the 3rd wicket.
India 202 in 63.1 overs ( KL Rahul 50, Ashwin 46, Marco Jansen 4/31, Oliver 3/64) and 85 for 2 in 20 overs ( Pujara 35*, Mayank Agarwal 23, Jansen 1/18) lead South Africa 229 in 79.4 overs ( Keegan Petersen 62, Bavuma 51, Shardul Thakur 7/61) by 58 runs.
