FIH Pro Hockey League Match 1: India starts the tournament with a resounding win

 The Indian men’s hockey team started their FIH Pro Hockey League on a resounding note defeating France played at Northwest University, Potchefstroom on Tuesday.

France started the first quarter on an aggressive note with more attacks on goals, more possession, and put Indian defense under pressure. After the first 10 minutes, India earned two back-to-back penalty corners, but France's defense was solid enough. Despite rebound chance, France failed to convert chance into a goal. At the end of the first quarter, scores remained 0-0.

The second quarter began well for the Indian team as Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner into a goal in the 21st minute to give bronze medallists 1-0 lead. It was an attacking style by the Indian forward to put enough pressure on France's defense. Varun Kumar converted India’s second penalty corner in the 24th minute doubling the lead. France was awarded a first penalty corner, but India converted defense into attack and Shamser made it easy to convert into a goal in the 28th minute to give India a commanding 3-0 lead. It was a dominating performance by the Indian team putting enough pressure on France's defense. At the end of the first half, India led 3-0. India dominated the possession with 18 circle penetrations as compared to 13 of France.

Indian team continued their domination on France as they made an aggressive start with another combination play with Manpreet Singh giving pass as Mandeep Singh hit a forceful shot in 32nd minute to give India a commanding 4-0 lead. Akashdeep Singh converted a brilliant goal in the 41st minute as the French captain made mistake inside the circle. At the end of the third quarter, India led 5-0.

Baumgarten Gaspard was given a green card and sent for 2 minutes. France earned two back-to-back penalty corners but Krishna Pathak saved a brilliant goal. Varun Kumar also was awarded a green card and sent for 2 minutes. France forward tried their best but could not convert chances into goals. India ended the match with a resounding 5-0 win.

India dominated the game with 34 circle penetrations as compared to 26 by France. It was a great performance by the Indian team who looked in complete control after a disappointing first quarter. India will now play their second match against South Africa on the same ground tomorrow.
