German Open 2022: Lakshya Sen enters semi-finals, Kidambi Srikanth knocked out

 The Indian shuttlers had a mixed day as Lakshya Sen entered the semi-finals stage of the Super 300 German Open played at Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulhelm on Friday.

World number 12 Lakshya Sen defeated Indian counterpart HS Prannoy in two straight games. HS Prannoy started the first game taking an early 4-0 lead. Soon after, Sen showed great fighting skills to level the scores at 10-10. Lakshya created enough pressure on Prannoy after the break and won the first easily by 21-15.

It was a closely fought second game initially as both players fought for each point. Sen managed a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, Sen took 5 points in succession to win the second game easily by 21-16 to move into the semi-finals. In the 2nd round, he defeated 4th seeded Anthony Gingting to progress into the top 8 stages.

The World Champion silver medallists Kidambi Srikanth lost to number 1 ranked Victor Axselen in two straight games. It was a dominating performance in the first game as the Danish player did not allow Srikanth to enter with a commanding lead at the mid-game break. Axselen maintained the momentum throughout winning the first game easily by 21-10. 

It was a closely fought 2nd game as both players fought for each point. The match ebbed and flow right through before Axselen held his nerves to win the second game by 23-21. Axselen will take on Lakshya Sen in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Sen will be looking to continue his impressive run against Victor Axelsen and hope to create an upset against the top-seeded player. Kidambi Srikanth also performed brilliantly reaching the quarterfinals stage giving a tough to Victor in 2nd game after a disappointing performance in 1st game.

PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal lost in the second-round matches. Yamaguchi, Tai Tzu Ying, Kento Momota were knocked out in the initial stages.
