German Open 2022: Lakshya Sen settles for silver

The World number 12 Lakshya Sen's brilliant run came to an end as he lost to Kulvant Vitisdarn in the finals of Super 300 German Open played at Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulhelm on Sunday.

Lakshya Sen defeated some top players in the run to the finals. He produced one of the best performances being down in the 3rd game and winning against Victor Axelsen, World number 1 in the semi-finals.

Sen struggled against the Thailand player Kulvant Vitisdarn right from the word go. The Indian struggled with his rhythm as Vitisdarn took the advantage of chances. Due to a leg injury, Sen looked in pain and never challenged the Thai player.

The first game saw the Thai player putting enough pressure on Sen’s injury. Despite Vitisdarn being in the lead. Sen produced a stunning comeback in the first game. After being down 13-18, Sen fought back strongly to reduce the gap to 18-20. Vitisdarn won the first game easily at 21-18.

Vitisdarn began the 2nd game on an aggressive note taking advantage of the injury of Sen. The Thai player put enough pressure with lovely strokes taking an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, Sen tried his best to make a comeback into the match but his knee injury did not allow him to play freely. Vitisdarn proved too much for the Indian as he won the 2nd game and match at 21-15.

It was an amazing performance by Sen who showed great fight and courage right throughout the tournament. He defeated Anthony Ginting, HS Prannoy, and then stunned Victor Axelsen in the semi-finals yesterday.

Sen has impressed one and all with his fighting skills. Kidambi Srikanth reached the quarterfinals stage losing to Axselen. PV Sindhu was the biggest disappointment as she was knocked out in the 2nd round itself.

The Indian shuttlers will now take part in the prestigious All England Badminton Championship 2022 starting from 16th March.
