German Open 2022: Lakshya Sen stuns World number 1 to reach finals

 The World number 12 and World Champion bronze medallists Lakshya Sen produced one of his best performances defeating World number 1 Victor Axelsen of Denmark in a thrilling encounter played at Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulhelm on Saturday.

It was an impressive performance by Sen in the first game as he dominated Axselen right from the word go putting the opposition under pressure. The Indian never looked threatened by his opposition and won the first game easily at 21-13.

The second game saw Axelesen make a strong comeback with attacking shots and made life tough for Lakshya Sen. After the mid-game interval, the Danish player showed intent winning the 2nd game easily at 21-12 to force the match into the decider.

It was a closely fought third and deciding game. Both players started initially taking alternate points till 4-4. Axelsen kept the pressure on Sen taking an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the mid-game interval, Sen struggled to keep pace along with the tall lanky player. From 16-19 down, Sen took points in succession and made life tough for the opposition. The Indian held his nerves to win the third game in a thriller by 22-20 to move into the finals.

Sen showed great character putting enough pressure on World number 1. He has been in brilliant form so far in this tournament defeating top players like Anthony Gingting, Indian counterpart HS Prannoy.

The Indian will take on Kulvant Vitisdarn in the finals tomorrow. It will be a big boost for Sen to win an international title before going on towards the All England Badminton Championship starting from 16th March 2022.

Sen kept the pressure on the Danish player and never looked down after being behind in the 3rd game. The Indian worked a lot on his fitness and would be eager to bring glory by winning tomorrow’s final.
