ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 10: Smriti Mandhana and Kaur’s brilliance gives India a huge win
The Indian Women’s Cricket team produced a dominating display to defeat West Indies played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Saturday.
Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to bat
first. Yastika Bhatia looked in sublime touch taking on the West Indies bowlers
especially hitting 3 boundaries off Selman. She kept scoring runs making life
tough for the opposition. Selman got the breakthrough dismissing Bhatia with a
simple return catch. Bhatia and Mandhana added 49 runs laying a strong
foundation. Mandhana struggled initially with disciplined West Indies bowling.
Indian captain Mithali Raj fell cheaply again caught by Connell. At the end of
the first 10 overs, the Indian team raced away to 62 for 2.
Deepti Sharma looked confident with her strokes and hit a
lovely boundary off a free hit. A superb one-handed catch by Hayley Mathews at
slips above her head resulted in the wicket of Deepti Sharma to leave the Indian
team in some trouble. Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana kept the scoreboard
ticking with singles and hitting bad deliveries away for boundaries. Knight took the job of wicketkeeping as Campbell went out due to an injury.
Mandhana showed her class after the initial struggle putting
bad deliveries away for boundaries. She reached her fifty off 66 balls
maintaining the momentum for the Indian team. Kaur also kept the pressure on West
Indies bowlers taking singles reaching her half-century off 61 balls. The experienced
pair showed their class with positive intent keeping the scoreboard ticking. It
was an amazing batting display as the West Indies bowlers lacked penetration giving
away free runs.
Mandhana upped the ante with lusty blows keeping West Indies
bowlers under immense pressure. The stylish-left-handed batter completed her
century off 108 balls chucking on brilliantly. She then took the West Indies
bowlers and made life tough for Taylor. A well-judged catch by Selman ended
the innings for Mandhana. Mandhana and Kaur added sensational 184 runs for the
3rd wicket.
Kaur took the charge with her brilliant hitting and
completed a well-compiled century off 100 balls. Richa Ghosh was run out trying
to take the second run. The Indian team lost Pooja Vastakar, Harmanpreet Kaur,
Jhulan Goswami. It was a superb batting effort as they posted a mammoth total of
317 for 8.
West Indies fielding and catching was not up to the mark.
Smriti Mandhana was dropped twice while Kaur was dropped once.
In reply, Deandra Dottin and Hayley Mathews provided a
flying start to West Indies. Dottin struggling with a back injury put enough
pressure on the Indian opening bowling pair. Dottin and Mathews hit 5 boundaries
off Jhulan Goswami’s over to put enough pressure. Raj decided to bring in
Deepti Sharma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad into the attack but Dottin and Mathews
kept the pressure on the Indian bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs, the West
Indies team raced away to 81 for 0.
Dottin looked in a great hitting mood and completed her fifty
off 35 balls. Sneha Rana provided the much-needed breakthrough for India taking
the top edge caught by Meghana Singh at short-fine. Dottin and Mathews added
quickfire 100 runs laying a strong foundation.
Meghna Singh and Sneha Rana broke the backbone of the West
Indies team. Singh grabbed the wicket of Knight with a good catch by Mandhana
and then got rid of captain Taylor. A lovely catch by Richa Ghosh ended the
innings for Mathews.
The Indian bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing
West Indies batters to score runs easily. Jhulan Goswami took the wicket of
Anisa Mohammed to become the leading wicket-takers in World Cup history. A superb
piece of relay work between Meghna Singh and a direct throw by Deepti Sharma
resulted in a run-out of Nation.
Sneha Rana took a simple return catch to dismiss Connell
helping the Indian team register a dominating 155 runs win.
Indian women 317 for 8 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 123,
Kaur 109, Anisa Mohammed 2/59) beat West Indies women 162 in 40.3 overs (
Dottin 62, Mathews 43, Sneha Rana 3/22, Meghna Singh 2/27) by 155 runs.
For her 123 off 119 balls, Smriti Mandhana was named the
player of the match. She decided to share the award with other centurion
Harmanpreet Kaur. With this win, the Indian team moves to the top of the points table.
