ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 11: Australia women too good for White Ferns

 The favorite Australian team provided too strong for the hosts White Ferns in a one-sided affair played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on Sunday.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to field first. The Australian openers Racheal Haynes put pressure on White Ferns opening the bowling with attacking strokes. McKay eventually got Healy as Australian openers added 37 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first 10 overs, Australian women scored 37 for 1.

White Ferns grabbed the wickets of Australian captain Meg Lanning and then dangerous Haynes to leave favorites in trouble at 56 for 3. The experienced Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney steadied the ship for Australia keeping the scoreboard ticking. Mooney also made batting easy showing her intent. Amelia Kerr got rid of Beth Mooney with a lovely delivery. Mooney and Perry added 57 runs for the 4th wicket. With Australia struggling a little bit, Tahlia McGrath came to the crease taking on Ferns bowlers. She along with Perry did not allow the host bowlers to settle. Perry completed her fifty off 74 balls while McGrath reached fifty off just 47 balls.

Tahuhu eventually dismissed dangerous Ellyse Perry with a good catch by Maddy Green. Perry and McGrath added 101 runs for the 5th wicket. Tahlia McGrath also fell soon after with a lovely knock. Ashleigh Gardner played a brilliant cameo with 48 not out off 18 balls to help Australian women score a competitive total of 269 for 8.

In reply, Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates provided a decent start. Ellyse Perry dismissed Suzie Bates with a lovely delivery to end the partnership. The Australian bowlers kept it tight and did not allow the White Ferns batters to score runs easily. Darice Brown got rid of Amelia Kerr with a lovely catch by Beth Mooney at second slips and then dismissed Sophie Devine to leave hosts in big trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, White Ferns made 29 for 3.

Tahlia McGrath got into the act dismissing Maddy Green to leave White Ferns in trouble. Brown produced another good delivery to dismiss McKay. Katey Martin was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the inside edge. Satterwhite and Katey Martin tried to steady the ship. Martin struggled with her health. Jade Wellington dismissed Martin and Hayley Jensen off successive deliveries to leave White Ferns in massive trouble. Martin and Satterwhite added 38 runs for the 6th wicket.

Amy Satterwhite and Lea Tahuhu provided some resistance with attacking strokes. Tahuhu was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it was pitching outside leg. Gardner dismissed Satterwhite with a good catch by Lanning. Satterwhite and Tahuhu added 35 runs for the 9th wicket. Gardner ended the innings getting the wicket of Tahuhu caught by Mooney to bowl out White Ferns for 128 in 30.2 overs.

Australian women 269 for 8 in 50 overs (Ellyse Perry 68, Tahlia McGrath 57, Lea Tahuhu 3/53) beat New Zealand women 128 in 30.2 overs (Satterwhite 44, Tahuhu 23, Darice Brown 3/22, Gardner 2/15) by 141 runs.

For her 68 and 1 for 18, Ellyse Perry was awarded the player of the match. With this win, Australian women move to the top of the points table.
