ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 13: South African women seals historic win over England
The South African women’s team produced one of their best performances so far defeating current Champions England in a nail-biting finish played at Bay Oval, Mount Manuagai on Monday.
South African captain Sune Luus won the toss and decided to
field first. The decision paid off as Marizanne Kapp got rid of Wyatt providing an easy catch to Wolvaardt at backward point. Kapp then dismissed Heather Knight
taking the inside edge onto the stumps leaving England on backfoot. Beaumont
looked in decent touch putting bad balls away for boundaries. At the end of the
first 10 overs, England women made 38 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Klass got the wicket of
dangerous Nat Sciver to leave England in trouble. Beaumont and Amy Jones joined
together putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Shabnim Ismail struggled with her line and length. Luus bought herself into
the attack but lacked rhythm. Beaumont and Jones kept England on course for a
big total. Beaumont completed her fifty off 84 balls to steady the ship for
defending Champions.
Shabnim Ismail went off the field due to an injury. Klaas provided
the much-needed breakthrough for South Africa dismissing Beaumont with lovely
delivery trapping in front of the stumps. Beaumont and Jones added 107 runs for
the 4th wicket. Soon after, Jones completed her fifty too off 71
balls.
A superb throw by Kapp and a run-out by Chetty ended in the
run-out of Jones to derail the England innings. Kapp bowled with great control
not allowing England batters to score runs easily. Katherine Brunt and Dunkley
put on 34 runs for the 6th wicket before Kapp displayed great variations.
Kapp dismissed Brunt and Dunkley in the same over. It was a good bowling
performance as South African women restricted England to 235 for 9 in 50 overs.
Laura Wolvaardt was given a reprieve early being dropped. Shurbsole
produced a stunning delivery to get rid of Lizelle Lee. England catching was
not great as Wolvaardt was dropped twice. Brits and Wolvaardt helped South
Africa end the first 10 overs at 38 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Brits struggled to time the
ball while Wolvaardt looked in decent touch against the pace bowlers. Nat
Sciver got a breakthrough for England dismissing Brits caught by Cross at fine
leg. Brits and Wolvaardt added 56 runs for the 2nd wicket. The South
African captain Luus struggled against Sophie Ecclestone but kept the scoreboard
ticking along with Wolvaardt.
Amy Jones missed a stumping chance to dismiss Wolvaardt.
Wolvaardt completed her fifty off 80 balls. Luus also looked in decent touch
keeping the scoreboard ticking. Charlie Dean produced a good delivery with a lovely stumping by Jones to end a lovely partnership. Wolvaardt and Luus added 73
runs for the 4th wicket. Wolvaardt was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as the ball was missing the leg stump.
The match ebbed and flowed as England bowlers made a good
comeback as Cross dismissed well-set Wolvaardt with a good catch by Sciver at
midwicket. Ecclestone then dismissed Mignon du Preez to leave them hanging on
the balance. Kapp and Chole Tryon put some lovely shots to release some
pressure. Tyron was run-out as Kapp hit a forceful shot hitting the hands of
Brunt. Tyron and Kapp added 30 runs for the 6th wicket.
Kapp played some lovely boundaries to put South Africa on
course for a win. Chetty and Kapp played Ecclestone’s last over up. Shurbsole
dismissed Kapp LBW to give England hopes. Ismail shattered England's hopes with a
lovely boundary. Chetty and Ismail helped South Africa chase down a competitive total.
South African women 236 for 7 in 49.2 overs (Laura Wolvaardt
77, Luus 36, Kapp 32, Any Shurbsole 2/34, Ecclestone 1/23) beat England women
235 for 9 in 50 overs (Beaumont 62, Jones 53, Kapp 5/35) by 3 wickets.
For her all-around performance, Kapp was awarded the player
of the match. With this win, South African women move to second position with
3 wins out of 3.
