ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 15: Indian women’s team lose to England
The Indian women’s team could not replicate their form as they lost to defending Champions England played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Wednesday.
England captain Heather Knight won the toss and decided to
field first. Yastika Bhatia and Smriti Mandhana started off brightly with some
lovely shots putting some pressure on England bowlers. Anya Shurbsole got the breakthrough
for England dismissing Bhatia taking the inside edge onto the stumps. The
Indian captain Mithali Raj failed one more time as she was brilliantly caught
by Sophia Dunkley.
A superb direct throw by Kate Cross from mid-on ended in the
wicket of Deepti Sharma to leave the Indian team struggling. Harmanpreet Kaur and
Smriti Mandhana showed intent ending the first 10 overs at 37 for 3.
After the field restrictions, the inform batters Kaur and
Mandhana kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Charlie Dean dismissed Harmanpreet Kaur and Sneha Rana in the same over to dent
India’s chances. Kaur and Mandhana added 33 runs for the 4th wicket.
Smriti Mandhana was looking good to score big runs but was dismissed trying to
sweep LBW by Ecclestone. Mandhana called for a review, but the decision stood
it out as the umpires' call.
Pooja Vastakar was given out by the umpire but on review, it
was overturned to not out due to a ball pitching outside off and then was
dismissed in the same over to leave the Indian team in big trouble at 86 for 7.
Richa Ghosh and Jhulan Goswami scored with intent putting the England bowlers
under some pressure.
Ghosh took on the England spinners, especially Charlie Dean, and then hit some lovely shots of Kate Cross. Goswami also looked in decent
touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ghosh’s bat was in the air as Sciver
produced a superb direct hit. Ghosh and Goswami added 47 runs for the 8th
wicket.
In the same over, Jhulan Goswami was caught by Wyatt at
backward point. Dean completed the innings for England dismissing Meghna Singh
to bowl out India for a modest total of 134 in 36.2 overs.
The Indian new ball bowlers of Jhulan Goswami and Meghna
Singh kept the pressure on England batters initially. A superb catch by Sneha
Rana resulted in the wicket of Wyatt. Jhulan Goswami dismissed Beaumont via
review for LBW. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out
due to the ball hitting the stumps to leave England in trouble.
Nat Sciver survived as the bails did not dislodge. Sciver put
the bad deliveries away for boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the
end of the first 10 overs, England women scored 34 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Sciver and Knight never looked
in trouble against the Indian spinners. Vastakar bowled with tight lines and
lengths not allowing the England batters to score runs easily. Sciver and
Knight kept the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries with ease. Vastakar eventually
got rid of Sciver taking the leading edge straight into the hands of Goswami.
Sciver and Knight added 65 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Amy Jones joined in with Heather Knight and kept the
momentum going on for England. A brilliant diving catch by Kaur at mid-on
resulted in the wicket of Jones. Jones and Knight added 33 runs for the 4th
wicket. Sophia Dunkley also played some lovely shots keeping England on course.
Meghna Singh dismissed Dunkley with a good catch by Ghosh and then dismissed
Katherine Brunt to bring some excitement.
Heather Knight looked composed and completed her fifty 66
balls. Sophie Ecclestone hit the winning runs as the England team registered 4
wickets win to register their first win.
England women 136 for 6 in 31.2 overs (Heather Knight 53*,
Nat Sciver 45, Meghna Singh 3/26) beat Indian women 134 in 36.2 overs (Mandhana
35, Ghosh 33, Charlie Dean 4/23, Shurbsole 2/20) by 4 wickets.
For her figures of 4 for 23, Charlie Dean was named the
player of the match award. Indian women’s team will take on Australia in the
next match on 19th March.
