ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 16: South African women stay unbeaten with a thrilling win over New Zealand

 The South African team continued their impressive run defeating hosts White Ferns in a thrilling finish played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Thursday.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost an early wicket of Suzie Bates bowled by Shabnim Ismail. The South African bowlers kept it tight not allowing Devine and Amelia Kerr to score runs easily. At the end of the first 10 overs, New Zealand women scored 30 for 1.

The South African team was one bowler short as Klaas went off the field due to an injury. Sophie Devine and Kerr took the advantage of bad bowling by Tryon and captain Luus. Both White Ferns batters kept pressure hitting boundaries at will. After the drinks break, South African captain Luus struck for South Africa dismissing Kerr trying to sweep given LBW. Kerr and Devine added 81 runs for the 2nd wicket.

South Africa struck again as Khaka got rid of Amy Satterwhite caught by Chetty to leave the hosts in trouble. Sophie Devine looked in great touch and completed her fifty off 61 balls. On other hand, Maddy Green struggled to keep the scoreboard with disciplined bowling by South African bowlers. Devine put bad deliveries away for boundaries while Maddy Green rotated the strike. A superb throw by Wolvaardt and gather by Chetty resulted in the run-out of Green. Green and Devine added 80 runs for the 4th wicket.

Brooke Halliday joined in with Devine and kept the scoreboard ticking. Devine was eventually dismissed by Khaka for a well-made 93. Devine and Halliday added 30 runs for the 5th wicket. The South African bowlers picked wickets at regular intervals. Kapp and Ismail did not allow the White Ferns batters to score runs easily.

Ismail produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Katey Martin. Kapp dismissed Halliday and Hannah Rowe off successive deliveries. Rowe was given caught out via review for caught behind. Thanks to a brilliant bowling effort at the death overs, the South African team bowled out White Ferns for 228 in 47.5 overs.

Chasing a modest total of 229 runs to win, Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt began off steadily before Lee was run-out with a brilliant throw by Bates and gathered by Katey Martin. South African women reached 33 for 1 at the end of the first 10 overs.

Tazmin Brits struggled with her timing and did not look impressive with her shots. On the other hand, Laura Wolvaardt timed the ball well keeping the scoreboard ticking. After the initial struggle, Brits showed her intent but was eventually stumped by Amelia Kerr. Brits and Wolvaardt added 48 runs for the 2nd wicket.

The South African captain Sune Luus came to the crease and kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and taking singles. Wolvaardt completed her fifty off 72 balls and put the White Ferns bowlers under pressure. Amelia Kerr eventually got the breakthrough for White Ferns dismissing well set Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt and Luus added 88 runs for the 3rd wicket.

White Ferns bowlers made a strong comeback by picking wickets of Mignon du Preez and the half-centurion Sune Luus to leave the match in the balance. Katey Martin missed a golden chance to stump out Tryon.

Tryon and Kapp put some lovely shots before MacKay dismissed Tryon providing a simple catch to Amelia Kerr at deep midwicket.

Kapp kept her nerves hitting vital boundaries of Tahuhu. MacKay dismissed Trisha Chetty with a high return catch. Sophie Devine dismissed the stumps of Shabnim Ismail to leave the match in the balance.

Kapp provided some relief with vital boundaries against Devine and then smashed a cracking boundary off McKay in the final over. Khaka did the job for South Africa hitting the winning runs.

South African women’s team registered a thrilling 2 wickets win. This was their first-ever win over White Ferns in World Cup history.

South African women 229 for 8 in 49.3 overs ( Laura Wolvaardt 67, Luus 51, Amelia Kerr 3/50, MacKay 2/49) beat New Zealand women 228 in 47.5 overs ( Sophie Devine 93, Green 30, Khaka 3/31, Ismail 3/27) by 2 wickets.

For her brilliant all-around efforts with 34 unbeaten and 2 for 44, Kapp was named the player of the match.
