ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 3: Australia began the tournament in a high scoring thriller
The Australian Cricket Team started their tournament with a win over arch-rivals England in a high-scoring thriller played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Saturday.
England captain Heather Knight won the toss and decided to
field first. Alyssa Healy looked in sublime touch hitting boundaries to put
pressure on the England bowlers. Healy was given out by the umpire but on
review, it was overturned as not out. Sciver struck for England dismissing Healy
caught by Brunt. Healy scored at a quick pace and added 35 runs laying a strong
foundation. At the end of the first 10 overs, Australian women scored 37 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Meg Lanning and Haynes took
some time to settle before putting pressure on the England bowlers. Lanning completed
her fifty off 75 balls while Haynes also reached half-century off 73 balls.
Both well-set batters scored runs easily maintain the momentum for the Australian
team. Katherine Brunt eventually dismissed dangerous Lanning with a good catch
by Beaumont. Lanning and Haynes added 196 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Haynes upped the ante and completed her century off 115 balls.
After scoring her century, Haynes scored at a quick pace
making life tough for the England bowlers. In an attempt to score quick runs,
Haynes was dismissed for a brilliant 130. Haynes and Beth Mooney added 60 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Ellyse Perry joined in the party with a quickfire
cameo to help Australian women post 310 for 3.
It was not an ideal start for England as Lauren Winfield
Hill was dismissed by Megan Schutt without opening her account. Tammy Beaumont
and captain Heather Knight showed intent putting pressure on the Australian bowlers.
At the end of the first 10 overs, England women scored 53 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Knight and Beaumont kept the
scoreboard ticking. Tahlia McGrath eventually dismissed Knight caught by
Lanning. Knight and Beaumont added 92 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Beaumont looked comfortable with her strokes reaching fifty off 54 balls. Nat
Sciver timed the ball brilliantly making life tough for Australian bowlers. Alana
King produced a superb piece of bowling to dismiss Beaumont stumped by Healy.
Beaumont and Sciver added 57 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Australia kept the pressure as they grabbed wickets of Amy
Jones and Dani Wyatt to leave defending Champions struggling. Nat Sciver made
the batting look easy completing her fifty off 43 balls. Sciver and Dunkley
kept the pressure on Australian bowlers hitting boundaries and rotating the
strike. Alana King eventually dismissed Dunkley trying to sweep but was bowled.
Dunkley and Sciver added 55 runs for the 6th wicket.
Nat Sciver scored runs with ease against King and other
Australian bowlers keeping England's hopes alive. The explosive all-rounder
Sciver completed her century off 79 balls. Kathrine Brunt also played a blinder
of an innings to give hopes for an England win. Sciver did not get much strike enough
in the last 2 overs. With 16 runs required, Jess Jonassen produced a
sensational one-handed catch on his own bowling to dismiss Brunt. Brunt and
Sciver added 64 runs for the 7th wicket. Jonassen then dismissed
Ecclestone off the final delivery as Australia won a close-fought match by 12
runs.
Australian women 310 for 3 in 50 overs (Haynes 130, Lanning
86, Sciver 2/68) beat England women 298 for 8 in 50 overs ( Nat Sciver 109*,
Beaumont 74, Alana King 3/59, Tahlia McGrath 2/51) by 12 runs.
For her 130 off 131 balls, Haynes was named the player of
the match.
