ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 4: Indian team starts the tournament with a comphrensive win
Despite looking ordinary with the bat, the Indian women’s team maintained their unbeaten streak with a comprehensive win over arch-rivals Pakistan played at Bay Oval, Mount Manuagai on Sunday.
Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to bat
first. Shafali Verma fell cheaply after being castled by Diana Baig. Smriti
Mandhana was not able to hit the gaps along with Deepti Sharma who was promoted
to number 3. The stylish left-handed batter showed some intent in taking on Nida
Dar. At the end of the first 10 overs, Indian women scored 33 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Deepti Sharma and Smriti
Mandhana kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting occasional
boundaries. Both batters looked at ease putting pressure on Pakistani bowlers. Mandhana
completed her fifty off 71 balls. Deepti Sharma was bowled trying to sweep by Nashra
Sandhu. Mandhana and Sharma added 92 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Pakistan
bowlers kept it tight not allowing the Indian batters to score runs easily.
Mandhana provided a simple return catch to Amin Aman. Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh,
and the Indian captain Mithali Raj fell in quick succession leaving the Indian team
in big trouble at 113 for 6.
Pooja Vastrkar and Sneha Rana provided a stunning comeback hitting
boundaries and running between the wickets brilliantly. Both Indian batters looked
confident with their strokes putting Pakistan bowlers under pressure. They changed
the momentum of the innings keeping the scoreboard ticking. Vastrkar struggled with
her injury but continued for the team reaching fifty off 48 balls while Rana
also joined in the party completing half-century off 45 balls. Vastrkar was
eventually dismissed in the final over by Fatima. Vastakar and Rana added 122
runs for the 7th wicket to help the Indian team post 244 for 7 in 50
overs.
Jhulan Goswami and Meghana Singh kept it tight against the
Pakistan openers Javeria Khan and Sidra Ameen. At the end of the first 10
overs, Pakistan scored just 26 runs. Soon after the field restrictions,
Rajeshwari Gayakwad grabbed the first wicket dismissing Javeria Khan caught by
Goswami at mid-on.
Pakistan captain Bismah Maharoof and Ameen tried to steady
the innings but Indian bowlers did not allow them to score runs with ease. A
superb low catch by Ghosh ended the innings for Maharoof. Sneha Rana got the
wicket of Omaima Sohail with another good catch by Deepti Sharma at slips. Jhulan
Goswami kept the pressure on Pakistan batters taking wickets of Ameen and Nida Dar.
Rajeshwari Gayakwad was spot on target grabbing the wicket
of Aliya Riaz with brilliant stumping by Ghosh. The left-arm spinner Gayakwad
never let Pakistan batters. Diana Baig provided some resistance before
providing an easy catch to Harmanpreet Kaur at long-on. The Indian bowlers especially
spinners strangled the batters and won the match easily.
Indian women 244 for 7 in 50 overs (Vastakar 67, Sneha Rana
53*, Mandhana 52, Nashra Sandhu 2/36, Nida Dar 2/45) beat Pakistan women 137 in
43 overs ( Sidra Ameen 30, Baig 24, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 4/31, Goswami 2/26) by
107 runs.
For her 67 off 53 balls, Pooja Vastakar was named the player
of the match. Indian team plays their next match on 10th March
against New Zealand.
