ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 5: New Zealand open their account with ease

After a narrow loss to West Indies in the opening match, New Zealand women cruised to an easy win over debutant Bangladesh played at University Oval, Dunedin on Monday.

The match was curtailed to 27 overs a side due to heavy rains. New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to field first. The Bangladesh openers Shamima Sultana and Fargana Hoque put pressure on the White Ferns bowlers, especially on Lea Tahuhu. Sultana showed intent in hitting boundaries with ease. With powerplay reduced to 5 overs, Bangladesh openers scored 41 without losing any wickets.

After the field restrictions, Sultana and Hoque struggled to rotate the strike. MacKay got the breakthrough dismissing Sultana taking top edge providing a simple catch to Tahuhu. Sultana and Hoque added 59 runs laying a strong foundation. Amy Satterwhite also did a superb job for White Ferns dismissing Nigar Sultana and Rumana Ahmed in the same over to derail Bangladesh's progress.

Sobhana Mostary struggled to time the ball against New Zealand spinners. Hoque completed her fifty off 60 balls but was eventually run out with a good throw by McKay on her bowling. The Bangladeshi batters did not have the power to hit big shots. After a decent start by Bangladesh openers, Satterwhite, McKay, Amelia Kerr made life tough for visitors. The New Zealand team restricted them to 140 for 8 in 20 overs.

In reply, it was a cautious start by Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates giving respect to Bangladesh's new-ball bowlers. At the end of the first powerplay overs, New Zealand openers scored 29 without losing any wickets.

The former Bangladeshi captain Salma Khatun rattled Devine’s stump. Devine and Bates added 36 runs for the opening wicket. Amelia Kerr looked cautious at the start before putting enough pressure on opposition bowlers. Bates also showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking and on course for a win.

Bates completed her fifty off 51 balls and kept the pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. Kerr also made the batting look easy. The experienced Bates became the 6th woman batter to score 1000 World Cup runs. Bates and Kerr put on unbeaten 108 runs for the 2nd wicket. New Zealand women registered a comprehensive 9 wicket win.

New Zealand women 144 for 1 in 20/27 overs (Devine 79*, Kerr 47*, Khatun 1/34) beat Bangladesh women 140 for 8 in 27 overs ( Fargana Hoque 52, Sultana 33, Amy Satterwhite 3/25) by 9 wickets.

For her unbeaten 79 off 68 balls, Suzie Bates was awarded the player of the match. With this win, New Zealand women opened their account in this tournament.
