ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 8: Indian team lose to New Zealand
The Indian batters struggled as they lost to White Ferns in a one-sided encounter played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Thursday.
Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to field
first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Pooja Vastakar showed her
fielding skills with a one-handed pick-up throw to run-out White Ferns
experienced Suzie Bates. Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr played with intent
putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Rajeshwari Gayakwad almost got
her wicket in the very first over as Yastika Bhatia dropped a tough chance. At the
end of the first 10 overs, White Ferns made 51 for 1.
Soon after the field restrictions, Pooja Vastakar got rid of
dangerous Devine with a good catch by Richa Ghosh. Devine and Kerr added 45
runs for the 2nd wicket. Amy Satterwhite joined in with Kerr putting
the Indian bowlers under pressure hitting bad deliveries away for boundaries.
Kerr looked in great touch scoring runs easily. The experienced Satterwhite
kept the pressure on the Indian spinners coming down the track and hitting boundaries.
Kerr completed her fifty off 63 balls. She was dismissed the very next ball by
Gayakwad. Kerr decided to call for review, but the decision stood as out. Kerr
and Satterwhite added 67 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Maddy Green joined in with Satterwhite to maintain the momentum
for White Ferns. Both batters showed intent with singles and hitting occasional
boundaries. Satterwhite completed her fifty off 60 balls. Deepti Sharma got the
big breakthrough dismissing Green providing a simple catch to Mandhana at long-on.
Satterwhite and Green added 54 runs for the 4th wicket. Katey Martin
also showed her intent against the Indian bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Satterwhite looked composed and scored runs easily to
maintain the momentum. Vastrkar got the big wicket of Satterwhite with a simple
catch by Mithali Raj. Satterwhite and Martin added 49 runs for the 5th
wicket. The Indian catching was not up to the mark as Vastakar dropped a sitter
to get rid of Martin.
Rajeshwari Gayakwad bowled brilliantly getting rid of Hayley
Jansen. The Indian bowlers kept the pressure on White Ferns batters with dot
balls. Vastakar produced two brilliant wickets of Lea Tahuhu with a superb
yorker and then Jess Kerr. Jhulan Goswami dismissed well-set Katey Martin with
another brilliant yorker. Thanks to a brilliant bowling effort, the Indian team
restricted White Ferns for 260 for 9 in 50 overs.
Chasing 261 runs to
win, Smriti Mandhana and Yastika Bhatia struggled to time the ball against McKay
and Jess Kerr. As a result of pressure, Mandhana got out providing an easy catch
to Bates. Tahuhu delivered the goods for White Ferns getting rid of Deepti
Sharma. The umpire gave not out and on review, it was overturned to out. At the
end of the first 10 overs, Indian women posted just 26 for 2.
Yastika Bhatia provided some relief for the Indian team
hitting the first boundary. Mithali Raj and Bhatia lacked the intent not able to
keep singles going on. Tahuhu struck once more time dismissing Bhatia caught by
MacKay. The Indian team reached 50 runs in the 19th over. Mithali
Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur also were not able to rotate with singles. MacKay
dropped a tough chance to dismiss Mithali Raj.
Mithali Raj struggled with her timing and did not look at
her fluent best. With the pressure mounting, Raj was stumped by Martin off Amelia
Kerr. Kaur and Raj added 47 runs for the 4th wicket. Kerr then
dismissed Richa Ghosh with a lovely delivery to leave the Indian team struggling at
97 for 5.
Sneha Rana and Harmanpreet Kaur provided some resistance to
the team before Tahuhu produced a sharp bounce to dismiss Rana. Rana and Kaur
added 30 runs for the 6th wicket. Pooja Vastakar failed to
contribute many runs being dismissed cheaply.
Harmanpreet Kaur looked confident with her strokes and
completed fifty off 54 balls. Soon after reaching her half-century, Kaur launched
some lusty blows against Jansen giving India some hopes. Jhulan Goswami
provided some support to Kaur. Kaur was eventually caught by Devine at
long-off. Kaur and Goswami added 35 runs for the 8th wicket. Meghana
Singh and Jhulan Goswami provided some entertainment. Jansen dismissed Goswami
and Gayakwad in the same over to give White Ferns 62 runs win.
New Zealand women 260 for 9 in 50 overs (Amy Satterwhite 75,
Amelia Kerr 50, Pooja Vastakar 4/34, Gayakwad 2/46) beat Indian women 198 in
46.4 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 71, Bhatia 28, Lea Tahuhu 3/17, Kerr 3/56) by 62
runs.
For her 75 off 84 balls, Amy Satterwhite was named the
player of the match. Indian women’s team will next play against West Indies at
Bay Oval, Mount Manuagai.
