ICC Women’s World Cup Match 9: South African women beat Pakistan in thriller
The South African women’s team held their nerves in the dying moments to seal a thrilling win over Pakistan played at Bay Oval, Mount Manuagai on Friday.
Pakistani captain Bismah Maharoof won the toss and decided
to field first. The decision paid off as the dangerous Lizelle Lee was brilliantly
caught by Sidra Ameen. Laura Wolvaardt looked in decent touch putting the bad
deliveries away for boundaries. Diana Baig dismissed Brits as Ameen took a good
catch to leave South Africa in trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, South
African women scored 29 for 2.
After the field restrictions, the Pakistani bowlers kept it
tight with disciplined bowling against Luus and Wolvaardt. Luus was given out by
the umpire but on review, it was overturned due to the ball hitting the edge of the
bat. Wolvaardt showed intent against the spinners reaching her fifty off 75
balls and maintained the momentum for South Africa by taking singles and
hitting occasional boundaries. Ghulam Fatima made an important breakthrough
dismissing Wolvaardt with a simple return catch. Luus and Wolvaardt added 89
runs for the 3rd wicket. Fatima then got rid of Mignon du Preez in
the same over with a good catch by Omaima Sohail. She then again struck for the
3rd time dismissing Kapp with full toss delivery straight into the
hands of Sidra Ameen to leave the South African team struggling.
Sune Luus survived another LBW shout given out by the umpire
but on review, it was overturned not out taking the edge of the bat. After that,
Pakistan reviewed for LBW but this time the decision was retained due to the umpires' call. Chole Tyron and Luus steadied the ship for the South African team by
taking singles and boundaries. The Pakistani catching was not great as Nida Dar
and Nashra Sandhu dropped easy chances. Luus completed her fifty off 94 balls
while Tryon changed the momentum with some lovely shots.
Nashra Sandhu took a simple return catch to dismiss Tryon.
Tryon and Luus added 55 runs for the 6th wicket. Trisha Chetty
looked in brilliant touch hitting boundaries putting the pressure right back on
Pakistan bowling and fielders. Fatima Sana eventually got rid of South African
captain Luus for a well-made 62. Luus and Chetty added 34 runs for the 7th
wicket. Fatima Sana bowled a superb 50th over as Shabnim Ismail was
run-out while taking the second run and then dismissed Trisha Chetty off the final
ball. South African women posted 223 for 9 at the end of 50 overs.
In reply, Pakistani openers Sidra Ameen and Nahida Khan
looked in decent touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Ismail
struck off successive deliveries getting wickets of Ameen and then captain
Bismah Maharoof to leave Pakistan struggling. Nahida Khan and Omaima Sohail
took Pakistan to 37 for 2 at the end of 10 overs.
Khan and Sohail kept the pressure on the South African bowlers
ticking the scoreboard. Khaka eventually got rid of Khan. Khan and Sohail added
69 runs for the 3rd wicket. Nida Dar struggled as she was not able
to rotate the strike. Sohail did not score runs quickly but remained calm to
complete her fifty off 83 balls. Klass got rid of Sohail with a sharp bouncer
caught by Lee. Sohail and Dar added 49 runs for the 4th wicket. Kapp
dismissed Aliya Riaz in the next over to leave Pakistan on the backfoot.
After the initial struggle, Nida Dar launched a big six to
realize some pressure. Fatima Sana looked quick between the wickets. Khaka
dismissed Fatima Sana LBW leaving Pakistan in trouble.
Nida Dar took most of the strike keeping Pakistan's hopes
alive. Sidra Nawaz was dismissed caught by Wolvaardt. Nawaz and Dar added 31
runs for the 7th wicket. Nida Dar looked calm and reached her fifty
off 69 balls. Baig scored 2 important boundaries in 49th over but a
superb throw by Tryon and run-out by Khaka yielded the wicket of Dar. Shabnim
Ismail held her nerves with a lovely return running catch to dismiss Baig. Ghulam
Fatima was run-out to help South African women win the match by 7 runs.
The South African fielders missed a few golden run-out chances
but the bowlers held their nerves to seal a thrilling win.
South African women 223 for 9 in 50 overs (Laura Wolvaardt
75, Luus 62, Fatima Sana 3/43, Ghulam Fatima 3/52) beat Pakistan women 217 in
49.5 overs ( Omamia Sohail 65, Nida Dar 55, Shabnim Ismail 3/41, Khaka 2/43) by
6 runs.
For her 3 for 41 in 9.5 overs, Shabnim Ismail was awarded
the player of the match. With this win, South African women registered their 2nd
successive win.
