Thanks to a career-best score of 175 not out by Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian Cricket Team ended the 2nd day of the 1st Test match in a commanding position played at PCA Stadium, Mohali on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 357 for 6, Ravichandran
Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Jadeja
reached his fifty off 87 balls while Ashwin also looked with ease reaching his
fifty too off 67 balls. Both Indian batters kept the scoreboard ticking and
kept the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay. Lakmal eventually struck dismissing Ashwin
with a bouncer caught by Dickwella. Ashwin and Jadeja added 130 runs for the 7th
wicket. Jadeja looked making life tough for the Lankan bowlers reaching his
century off 160 balls. India went into the lunch break at 468 for 7.
The second session began as Jayant Yadav was dismissed
cheaply. Ravindra Jadeja showed his intent and scored runs at a quick pace
against Lasith Emdbulyena. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami gave good support
to Jadeja. Jadeja took most of the strike and showed his hitting abilities. Sri
Lanka missed an unfortunate run-out chance mix-up between Jadeja and Shami did not
yield any results. Jadeja made the batting look easy to complete his 150 off
211 balls. He then continued to pile on the runs along with Shami. Shami also
joined in the hands before Rohit Sharma declared their innings on 574 for 8.
Jadeja posted his highest Test score of 175 not out and best scorer by Indian
at number 7 in Test matches. The umpire decided to call early tea. Jadeja and Shami added unbeaten 103 runs for the 9th wicket.
Sri Lankan openers Lahiru Thirimanne and Dimuth Karaunate
began off steadily putting the bad deliveries for runs against Bumrah and
Shami. Rohit Sharma decided to bring on Ashwin and Jayant Yadav early, but the
Lankan openers looked confident. Ashwin eventually got the breakthrough
dismissing Thirimanne with a straighter delivery hitting in front of the
stumps. Lankan openers added 48 runs for the opening wicket. Ashwin troubled
Pathum Nissanka with his variations and almost dismissed him.
Ravindra Jadeja brilliant day continued as he dismissed Sri
Lankan captain Dimuth Karaunate with a sharp spinning delivery to put visitors
under backfoot. Pathum Nissanka and Angelo Mathews showed some intent against
Ravindra Jadeja. Jasprit Bumrah deceived Nissanka with a slower one hitting the
stumps before the replays showed that it was overstepping. Bumrah bowled a superb
spell against Nissanka and Mathews.
Bumrah then got rid of experienced Mathews with good
delivery. Mathews and Nissanka added 37 runs for the 4th wicket.
Soon after, Ashwin was bought into the attack dismissing Dhanajaya de Silva to
leave Lanka in more trouble. Charith Asalanaka survived the LBW shout given out by
the umpire but on review, it was overturned due to the ball missing the stumps. Nissanka
and Asalanaka ensured that Sri Lanka end the 2nd day at 108 for 4.
Sri Lanka 108 for 4 in 43 overs (Dimuth Karaunate 28, Nissanka
26*, Ashwin 2/21) trail India 574 for 8 in 129.2 overs ( Ravindra Jadeja 175*,
