India versus Sri Lanka 2nd Test 1st Day: Shreyas Iyer and bowlers leads India’s domination
The Indian Cricket Team kept the Sri Lankan team on backfoot on the first day of the Pink Ball Test match played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Saturday.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as Mayank Agarwal was run-out
with a mix-up as the umpires called it no-ball and he asked for a review, but
he was given out. The pitch has a lot of assistance for the spinners. Emdbulyena dismissed
dangerous Rohit Sharma with a simple catch to Dhanajaya de Silva leaving India in
some trouble.
Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli steadied the ship against
wayward Sri Lankan bowling. Both Indian batters kept on scoring runs quickly
making life tough for the opposition captain. Jayawickrama struck with a lovely
rebound catch by Dickwella. Vihari and Kohli added 47 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Dhanajaya de Silva got rid of Kohli on a ball that kept low. Rishabh Pant
looked in positive touch right from the word go. India went into the tea break
at 93 for 4.
The second session saw Pant putting enough pressure on
Lankan spinners along with Shreyas Iyer. Emdbulyena produced a beauty to
dismiss Pant. Pant and Iyer added 40 runs for the 5th wicket. Emdbulyena
then got rid of Ravindra Jadeja that bounced giving a simple catch to Thirimanne at
slips to leave India in some trouble. Shreyas Iyer took on the Lankan spinners making
life tough for the opposition captain.
Ravichandran Ashwin was given out by the umpire but on
review, it was overturned to not out going over stumps. Dhanajaya de Silva
struck getting rid of Ashwin with a lovely catch by Dickwella. Ashwin and Iyer
added 35 runs for the 7th wicket. Shreyas Iyer completed his fifty
off 54 balls keeping India’s score above par on a tough batting pitch. As the
spinners struggled for rhythm, Lakmal dismissed Patel taking the inside edge onto
the stumps. Patel and Iyer added 32 runs in quick time for the 8th
wicket.
Shreyas Iyer took most of the strike and made life tough for
the Lankan bowlers. After the wicket of Shami, Iyer kept hitting shots but was
eventually stumped as the Indian team made 252. With that, the umpires called
dinner break.
Jasprit Bumrah put the Lankan team on the backfoot getting rid
of Kusal Mendis caught by Shreyas Iyer. Bumrah struck for the second time
dismissing Thirimanne with another lovely catch at slips by Iyer. Mohammed
Shami produced a beauty to get rid of Dimuth Karurante leaving Lanka on the
backfoot.
Shami struck once more time as he dismissed Dhanajaya de
Silva via review. The umpires called it not out and on review, it was overturned
to out leaving Lanka in deep trouble at 28 for 4. Angelo Mathews looked in
decent touch against Indian spinners after being tested by Shami and Bumrah.
Charith Asalanaka played a rash stroke caught by Ashwin.
Mathews put the Indian bowlers under some pressure along with Dickwella. Right
before the stroke of day 1, Bumrah dismissed Mathews with a lovely catch by Rohit
Sharma. Mathews and Dickwella added 35 runs for the 6th wicket.
Shami and Bumrah tested Emdbulyena with good deliveries. Sri Lanka ended the first
day at 86 for 6.
