India versus Sri Lanka 2nd Test 2nd Day: India on course for a big win
The Indian Cricket Team ended the 2nd day of the Pink-Ball Test match against visiting Lankan side in a dominating position played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 86 for 6, Sri Lanka lost
an early wicket of Lasith Emdbulyena with a sharp bouncer by Jasprit Bumrah.
The Indian bowlers bundled out Sri Lanka for a paltry total of 109 runs. Bumrah
looked the best bowler for Team India with his first five-wicket haul in Test
matches on Indian soil.
In reply, Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma provided a decent
start putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Praveen Jayawickrama went
off the field due to an injury while fielding. The Indian openers showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking. Lasith Emdbulyena struck for Sri Lanka
dismissing Mayank Agarwal caught by Dhanajaya de Silva at slips. The Indian
openers added 42 runs in quick time. Hanuma Vihari and Rohit Sharma showed
intent, especially against Dhanajaya de Silva and Emdbulyena. India went into
the tea break at 61 for 1.
After the tea break, Rohit and Vihari trusted their play as
Jayawickrama returned to the bowling crease. Dhanajaya de Silva dismissed Rohit Sharma
coming down the track being caught by Mathews. Vihari and Rohit added 56 runs
for the 2nd wicket. The Sri Lankan captain Karurante did not take
reviews for two LBW shouts. Jayawickrama produced beauties to dismiss Vihari
and a low-bounce delivery to get rid of Kohli.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease and kept the pressure on the Sri
Lankan spinners right from the word go. Pant looked in sensational touch
hitting boundaries and sixes at will. The explosive left-handed batter Pant
completed the fastest half-century by Indian in Test matches off 28 balls. He
eventually was dismissed caught by Dickwella in an attempt to hit another big
shot. Shreyas Iyer and Pant added 45 runs for the 5th wicket.
Ravindra Jadeja got a reprieve as he was given out on review, but Emdbulyena
overstepped.
At the end of the second session, India made 199 for 5. The
third session saw Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja scoring runs at a quick pace.
Iyer was given out but on review, it was overturned to not out. Iyer completed
his fifty off 69 balls. Vishwa Fernando dismissed Jadeja with a lovely
delivery. Jadeja and Iyer added 63 runs for the 6th wicket. Ashwin
and Iyer put important runs putting 31 runs for the 7th wicket.
Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed in quick succession. Axar Patel and
Mohammed Shami joined in the party with big shots. With the fall of Axar
Patel’s wicket, India declared their innings on 303 for 9 setting a massive
target of 447.
Jasprit Bumrah got the breakthrough in first over itself
trapping Lahiru Thirimanne. Dimuth Karurante and Kusal Mendis showed some
intent against the Indian bowlers with few anxious moments. Sri Lanka ended the
2nd day at 28 for 1 still needing 419 runs to win.
