Women’s World Cup 2022 Day 2 Summary: Khaka’s spell helps South Africa register a comphrensive win
South African women’s team started the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 with a comprehensive win over debutant Bangladesh played at University Oval, Dunedin on Saturday.
South African women survived a close scare before defeating
debutant Bangladesh played at University Oval, Dunedin on Saturday. Bangladesh
captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and decided to field first. Laura Wolvaardt
started the innings brightly hitting boundaries with ease. Nahida Akter dropped
a simple chance to dismiss Brits. Brits struggled to score runs easily as the
Bangladeshi bowlers kept tight lines and lengths. Farhia Trisna struck for
Bangladesh dismissing Brits caught by Rumana Ahmed for 8. Brits and Wolvaardt
put on 30 laying a strong foundation. At the end of the first 10 overs, South
Africa posted 35 for 1.
Laura Wolvaardt showed intent in keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Lara Goodall struggled against the Bangladeshi bowlers. Ritu Moni
dismissed well-set Wolvaardt for well-made 41. Wolvaardt and Goodall added 39
runs for the 2nd wicket. The Bangladeshi bowlers kept tight lines
not allowing South African batters to score runs easily on a tough batting
pitch reducing them to 119 for 5. Chole Tyron and Kapp showed intent putting
pressure rotating the strike and hitting boundaries. Jahanara Alam dismissed
the dangerous Tyron for well-made 39. Tyron and Kapp added 71 runs for the 6th
wicket.
Bangladeshi bowlers kept their calm and dismissed Trisha
Chetty, Ismail, well Kapp, and then Khaka to bowl out South Africa for 207 in 49.5
overs.
In reply, it was a sedate start by the Bangladeshi bowlers
as Sultana and Sharmin Akther against disciplined South African pace bowling.
At the end of the first 10 overs, Bangladesh openers added 27 runs without
losing the wicket.
After the field restrictions, Khaka was bought into the
attack. The Bangladeshi openers showed some intent against South African disciplined
bowling. Khaka ended a strong opening partnership of 69 runs getting the wicket
of Sultana. Khaka took 2 more quick wickets of Akther and Murshida Khatun in
quick succession to put Bangladesh in trouble. A superb direct throw by Klass
resulted in the run-out of Fargana Hoque.
Bangladesh was never in the hunt as they kept losing wickets
at regular intervals. The captain Nigar Sultana struggled to time the ball. Ritu
Moni and Sultana scored runs easily as the South African bowlers especially Kapp
and Ismail faced troubles with injuries.
Ismail eventually struck in pressure time to dismiss Ritu
Moni. Ritu Moni and Nigar Sultana added 53 runs for the 7th wicket.
The captain Nigar Sultana also went as brilliant throw by du Preez and take by
Klaas left Bangladesh struggling. South Africa completed the formalities winning
the match easily.
South African women 207 in 49.5 overs (Kapp 42, Wolvaardt
41, Trisna 3/35, Jahanara Alam 2/28) beat Bangladesh women 175 in 49.3 overs (
Sharmin Akther 34, Nigar Sultana 29, Ayabonga Khaka 4/32) by 32 runs.
For his 4 for 32 in 10 overs, Ayabonga Khaka was named the player
of the match.
Khaka 4 for 32 helps South African women beat Bangladesh by 32 runs.
