Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 1: West Indies stun favourites New Zealand in a thrilling finish
The West Indies women’s team began the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 with a thrilling win over favorites New Zealand played at Bay Oval, Mount Manuagai on Friday.
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided
to field first. The explosive Deandra Dottin opened the innings along with
Hayley Mathews. After struggling with her rhythm, Tauhou struck for hosts
getting rid of Dottin caught by Jess Kerr. Jess Kerr took the wicket of Kyica
Knight cheaply to leave West Indies struggling. Hayley Mathews showed intent in putting bad deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first 10 overs,
West Indies women scored 54 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Mathews and Stefanie Taylor
steadied the ship keeping the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries and taking
singles. Mathews looked in sublime touch reaching her fifty off 55 balls. The
experienced Taylor survived DRS shout as the decision was overturned by the
umpire. Tahuhu was bought into the attack and got rid of Stefanie Taylor caught
down the leg. Taylor and Mathews added 66 runs for 3rd wicket. The
New Zealand fielding and catching were not great. Brookie Halliday dropped a
simple chance to get rid of Campbell.
Hayley Mathews looked in deep trouble as she struggled while
taking the second run. Amelia Kerr dismissed Campbelle via review for LBW. The
umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out. Mathews and
Campbelle added 50 runs for the 4th wicket. Chedean Nation struggled
initially but kept the momentum going on. On other hand, Mathews completed well
compiled century off 118 deliveries.
Mathews upped the ante with some lusty blows before being
caught by Rowe at long-off. Mathews and Nation added 55 runs for the 5th
wicket. New Zealand bowlers made a decent comeback picking wickets at regular
intervals. Anisa Mohammed provided quickfire runs in the last over to help West
Indies post a competitive total of 259 for 9.
Chasing 260 runs to win, Suzie Bates was unfortunately
run-out as Devine hit a powerful shot hitting the hands of Henry. Devine looked
in brilliant touch showing her intent on keeping West Indies bowlers struggling.
At the end of the first 10 overs, New Zealand women posted 41 for 1.
Soon after the field restrictions, Mathews's dream day
continued as she dismissed Amelia Kerr. Kerr and Devine added 33 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Devine made the batting look easy reaching her fifty off 70 balls. On
other hand, Amy Satterthwaite kept calm as the scoreboard ticked with ease.
The experienced Anisa Mohammed got the big wicket of Satterwhite.
Devine and Satterwhite added 76 runs for the 3rd wicket. West Indies
bowlers kept the pressure on New Zealand batters taking 3 quick wickets leaving New
Zealand in big trouble at 162 for 6.
Katey Martin released the pressure from Devine hitting
boundaries with ease. On the other hand, Devine reached her century off 117
balls. A superb return catch by Henry resulted in the big wicket of Sophie Devine.
Sophie Devine and Martin added 53 runs for the 7th wicket.
Jess Kerr and Martin showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking.
The match went right down the wire as Deandra Dottin produced a brilliant yorker
to dismiss well-set Martin. Martin and Kerr added 40 runs for the 8th
wicket. Dottin then got the wicket of Jess Kerr caught by Henry at mid-off.
With 4 runs required off 2 balls, a superb throw by Campbell and brilliant
run-out by Dottin to dismiss Fran Jonas helped West Indies women win the match
by 3 runs.
The West Indies outfield catching was shabby enough as they dropped 5 catches and also their ground fielding was shabby enough. Despite their sloppy efforts, Dottin held her nerves to help West Indies seal a thrilling win over New Zealand.
West Indies women 259 for 9 in 50 overs ( Hayley Mathews
119, Chedean Nation 36, Lea Tahuhu 3/57, Jess Kerr 2/43) beat New Zealand women
256 in 49.5 overs ( Sophie Devine 108, Katey Martin 44, Hayley Mathews 2/41,
Dottin 2/2) by 3 runs.
For her all-around performance with 119 and 2 for 41, Hayley
Mathews was named the player of the match.
