FIH Junior Hockey World Cup 2022: Indian women’s team move into Semi-finals

 The Indian women’s team continued their impressive run with a dominating 3-0 win over South Korea in the quarterfinals of the Junior Hockey World Cup 2022 played at NorthWest University, Potchefstroom on Friday.

It was a cautious start by both teams with South Korea getting the first real chance, but the striker was not able to trap the shot. India earned a penalty corner. Mumtaz scores from a brilliant deflection goal-scoring her sixth goal of the tournament in the 11th minute giving India a 1-0 lead. Right before the hooter, Lalrindki scores a brilliant field goal to double the tally. At the end of the first quarter, India led 2-0. Despite South Korea having 3-2 circle penetrations, India converted 2 goals.

The Indian team dominated the possession but was not able to convert chances into goals. Despite few chances in the quarter, the Indian team ended the first half with the scoreboard reading 2-0. India dominated circle penetrations with 13 as compared to 5 by South Korea.

South Korea began the third quarter on an aggressive note with the first penalty corner of the match. Seona Kim’s deflection shot went over the crossbar. The Indian team missed many chances but Sangita converted from a brilliant pass by two Indian forwards in the 41st minute to lead 3-0. It was a dominating performance by the Indian team who kept the pressure on South Korea's defense. At the end of the third quarter, the Indian team led 3-0.

Sharmila Devi was awarded a green card at the start of the fourth quarter. South Korean player also was awarded a green card means both teams were 10 members each. The Indian team continued their domination over South Korea missing lots of chances. Despite South Korea trying their level best, India won the match by 3-0 and moved into the semi-finals of the Junior Hockey World Cup for the 2nd time in their history.

They will face a stern challenge in the semi-finals taking on the Netherlands to be played on 10th April 2022.
