FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 Leg 1: India stun World number 1 in a close-fought game

 The Indian women’s senior returned to action with a closely fought win over World number 1 Netherlands in the first leg of FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday.

The Netherlands started the first quarter on an aggressive note as they earned their first penalty corner of the game but was brilliantly saved by Savita Punia. The visitors kept the pressure on the Indian team with their 3rd penalty corner in 7 minutes, but the hosts denied with their solid defense. Neha Goyat converted from a rebound of a penalty corner in the 11th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.

The Dutch began the second quarter with aggressive intent, but the Indian defense remained solid enough. Both teams-maintained pressure on each other as they kept enough pressure. Despite the Netherlands team with aggressive moves, India scored from their 2nd penalty corner as Sonika made it 2-0 in the 28th minute. At the end of the first half, the hosts led with a scoreline of 2-0.

It was a decent start for the Indian team in the third quarter as they put enough pressure on the Netherlands' defense. The visitors earned a penalty corner which was then given a penalty stroke. Jansen Yibbi converted the stroke into the goal in the 40th minute to reduce the gap to 1-2. Savita Punia guessed it right, but it went under the foot. At the end of the third quarter, India still led 2-1.

The fourth quarter saw the Netherlands putting pressure, but the Indian defense remained up to the mark. They earned a penalty corner, but it was brilliantly defended. The hosts kept it calm and looked to calm the strokes. Despite lots of efforts by the World number 1 side, India held on to win the match 2-1. Indian goalkeeper was superb with her efforts denying Netherlands the equalizer along with defenders.

The Indian team showed great fight and character against the World's number 1 side. They will take on the Netherlands in the 2nd leg tomorrow.
