FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 Leg 2: Indian team end season with a comfortable victory

 The Indian men’s hockey team ended the home season with a comfortable win over a young German side in the 2nd leg of the FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday.

It was an aggressive start by the Indian team putting pressure on the German defense. Both teams did not get chances in the first 8 minutes. Akashdeep Singh missed a golden chance to get an opening goal for India. Both teams increased the pace of the game but none of the teams were in real danger. At the end of the first quarter, scores remained 0-0.

The second quarter began on a positive note with Sukhjeet Singh converting a brilliant field goal in the 19th minute to give India a 1-0 lead. India dominated the play with 10 circle penetrations as compared to 4 by Germany. Both teams were unable to earn any penalty corners in the first half.

India started the 3rd quarter on a decent note with a review for a penalty corner. The umpire decided to give a free hit, but the decision was overturned to a penalty corner. Indian team kept the pressure on the young German side. Varun Kumar proved too hot for Germany as he converted a penalty corner into a goal in the 41st minute to give India a 2-0 lead. The visitors got one goal back leaving P Sreejesh stranded. Boeckel converted it into a goal in the 45th minute ending the 3rd quarter with India leading 2-1.

Gurinder Singh was awarded a yellow card and suspended for 5 minutes leaving India on the backfoot. Michael went away for 2 minutes. The Indian team took advantage as Abhishek produced a superb deflection goal in the 54th minute to give the hosts a commanding 3-1 lead. Germany tried their best to give India a fight with a penalty corner, but they missed the chance.

Indian team showed great domination winning the match by 3-1. With this win, the Indian team consolidated their top position with 27 points.

India had double circle penetrations with 24 as compared to 12 in Germany. They will now their next Pro Hockey League match in June against Belgium.
