IPL 2022 Match 16: Shubman Gill knock and Rahul Tewaita’s magic gives Gujarat Titans last ball win

 Gujarat Titans registered a thrilling last-ball win against Punjab Kings in high scoring thriller played at Brabourne Stadium, CCI on Friday.

Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to field first. Mayank Agarwal’s poor form continued dismissed cheaply by Hardik Pandya. Shikhar Dhawan looked in decent touch putting pressure on the GT bowlers. Jonny Bairstow replacing Rajapaksa fell cheaply caught by Tewaita to leave PBKS in trouble at 34 for 2. Liam Livingstone came to the crease and looked cautious enough against disciplined GT bowling. At the end of the first six overs, PBKS made 43 for 2.

After the field restrictions, Liam Livingstone destroyed Gujarat Titans bowling. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS scored 60 for 2. Livingstone and Dhawan kept the opposition bowlers hitting boundaries at will. Rashid Khan struck a big blow dismissing Dhawan with a good catch by Wade. Dhawan and Livingstone added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Jitesh Sharma also played a cameo knock putting enough pressure on GT bowlers. Livingstone kept his promise alive with fifty off just 21 balls. Darshan Nalakande making his IPL debut got rid of Jitesh. Jitesh and Livingstone added 38 runs for the 4th wicket. Nalakande then dismissed Odean Smith the very next ball to leave PBKS in trouble.

At the end of the second timeout, PBKS made 134 for 5. Sharukh Khan looked impressive with 2 sixes off Mohammed Shami. Rashid Khan dismissed both Livingstone and Sharukh in the same over to dent PBKS. Kagiso Rabada also fell via a combination run out by Wade and Shami. Rahul Chahar and Arshdeep Singh added vital runs thanks to Chahar’s brilliance. At the end of the 20 overs, Punjab Kings posted 189 for 9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 190 runs to win, Shubman Gill started off brightly with positive strokes. Matthew Wade went cheaply dismissed by Rabada caught by Bairstow. Gill and Sai Sudarshan making his IPL debut put PBKS bowlers under pressure with positive strokes. Gill continued the impressive form that he displayed against Delhi Capitals. At the end of the first six overs, Gujarat Titans made 53 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Gill and Sudarshan maintained the momentum keeping the scoreboard ticking making life tough for PBKS bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, Gujarat Titans ended at 88 for 1. Gill looked in decent touch and completed fifty off 29 balls. Sai Sudrhasan also looked impressive taking on PBKS bowlers. At the end of the second timeout, Gujarat Titans scored 119 for 1.

Punjab Kings made a strong comeback with tight bowling PBKS bowlers especially Rahul Chahar, Rabada, and Arshdeep Singh. Jitesh Sharma went off the field due to a hamstring injury.

Rahul Chahar got the breakthrough for PBKS dismissing Sai with a good catch by Mayank Agarwal. Sai and Gill added 101 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bairstow missed a stumping chance to dismiss Gill while Rabada dropped Pandya’s catch. Arshdeep Singh bowled a stunning 18th over giving away just 5 runs.

Rabada struck for PBKS dismissing well-set Gill caught by Agarwal. Gill and Pandya added 37 runs added for the 3rd wicket. David Miller struggled to time the ball. Odean Smith bowled the final over with 19 runs to defend.

Hardik Pandya was brilliantly run out with a superb throw by Bairstow. David Miller hit a boundary to give some hopes for Gujarat Titans. With 12 runs required off 2 balls, Rahul Tewaita demonstrated hitting abilities smashing the final ball for a six to help Gujarat Titans register a thrilling win.

Gujarat Titans 190 for 4 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 96, Sudrhasan 35, Rabada 2/35) beat Punjab Kings 189 for 9 in 20 overs (Liam Livingstone 64, Dhawan 35, Rashid Khan 3/22) by 6 wickets.

For his 96 off 52 balls and 2 catches, Shubman Gill was named the man of the match award. With this win, Gujarat Titans became the first team in IPL 2022 to win 3 successive matches. They move to 2nd in the points table.
