IPL 2022 Match 17: Sunrisers Hyderabad thrash CSK to register first win

 It was a comprehensive performance by Sunrisers Hyderabad registering their first win of IPL 2022 against defending champions Chennai Super Kings played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

SRH captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to field first. It was a steady start by Robin Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad hitting some lovely shots. Washington Sundar got the first breakthrough for SRH dismissing Uthappa caught by Markram at long-on. T Natarajan produced a stunning yorker to get rid of Gaikwad to leave CSK struggling. Umran Malik bowled with pace troubling Rayudu and Moeen Ali. At the end of the first six overs, CSK made 41 for 2.

Rayudu and Moeen Ali put some pressure on SRH bowlers trying to keep the momentum going for CSK. At the end of the first timeout, CSK scored 63 for 2. SRH bowlers did not allow Moeen and Rayudu to score runs easily. The pitch was tough to bat on as both Moeen and Rayudu struggled to time the ball. At the end of the second timeout, CSK made 97 for 2.

Sundar provided the breakthrough right after the timeout getting the wicket of Rayudu with a simple catch to Markram at long-on. Rayudu and Moeen Ali added 62 runs for the 3rd wicket. Markram did the job for SRH dismissing other well-set batsmen Ali caught by Rahul Tripathi at long-on. Shivam Dube did not contribute to being dismissed by Natarajan at short-third man. SRH bowlers did not allow CSK batsmen to score runs freely. Marco Jansen dismissed MS Dhoni with a short delivery caught by Umran Malik at fine leg. Ravindra Jadeja provided some vital runs against Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Despite conceding runs, Kumar dismissed Jadeja caught by Williamson. It was a disciplined bowling effort by SRH to restrict CSK to a modest total of 154 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 155 runs to win, Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson began off cautiously against a disciplined opening spell by CSK bowlers. Sharma looked in great touch releasing the pressure along with Williamson who steadied the ship. At the end of the first six overs, SRH openers scored 37 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Sharma showed intent making life tough for CSK bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, SRH made 62 for 0. Mukesh Chaudhary eventually struck dismissing Williamson with a poor stroke providing a simple catch to Moeen Ali. Williamson and Sharma added 89 runs for the opening wicket. Sharma played with intent completing fifty off 32 balls. Rahul Tripathi also looked in sublime touch right from word go maintaining the momentum for SRH. At the end of the second timeout, SRH made 125 for 1.

Abhishek Sharma’s brilliant innings came to an end caught by Jordan. Sharma and Rahul Tripathi added 56 runs for the 2nd wicket. Tripathi and Pooran completed the job as SRH registered an 8 wicket win with 14 balls to spare.

SRH 155 for 2 in 17.4 overs (Abhishek Sharma 75, Rahul Tripathi 39*, Mukesh Chaudhary 1/30) beat CSK 154 for 6 in 20 overs (Moeen Ali 48, Rayudu 27, Sundar 2/21, Natarajan 2/30) by 8 wickets.

For his 75 off 50 balls, Abhishek Sharma was named the man of the match. SRH registered their opening win of IPL 2022.
