IPL 2022 Match 23: Punjab Kings beat Mumbai Indians in a high scoring thriller

 Punjab Kings held their nerves at the end to register a close-fought win over five-time Champions Mumbai Indians in high scoring thriller played at MCA Stadium, Pune on Wednesday.

MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. Mayank Agarwal who struggled in the first four matches looked in great touch right from the word go putting pressure on Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat. Shikhar Dhawan played with intent leaking runs. PBKS openers never allowed MI bowlers to settle making life tough for MI bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Dhawan and Agarwal raced away to 65 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.

Mayank and Dhawan kept the momentum going with positive strokes making life tough for MI bowlers. Mayank completed fifty off 30 balls maintaining momentum. Murgun Ashwin struck eventually for MI dismissing Agarwal for a well-made half-century. Agarwal and Dhawan added 97 runs laying a strong foundation.

Shikhar Dhawan showed intent scoring runs with innovative strokes making life tough for Mumbai Indians bowlers. On other hand, Bairstow struggled to time the ball. Unadkat dismissed Bairstow taking inside onto the stumps. Bairstow and Dhawan added 30 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bumrah bowled a stunning yorker to dismantle Livingstone to stem the PBKS scoring rate.

Dhawan looked compact and completed fifty off 37 balls. After completing his half-century, the left stylish left-handed batsman upped the ante hitting boundaries with ease. Thampi dismissed well-set Dhawan caught by Pollard at long-on. Jitesh Sharma and Sharukh Khan smashed Unadkat for 23 runs in the 19th over to change the momentum of the innings. Both played cameo knocks helping Punjab Kings post 198 for 5. Jitesh and Sharukh added 46 runs for the 5th wicket.

Chasing 199 runs to win, Rohit Sharma started the innings brightly taking on PBKS opening bowlers, especially Rabada. After being hammered by Rohit, Rabada dismissed the MI captain to give the breakthrough. Rohit and Ishan Kishan added 31 runs in quick time. Vaibhav Arora produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Kishan to leave MI on the backfoot.

Dewald Brevis looked wanting against PBKS pacers while Tilak Verma took a few balls to settle. At the end of the first six overs, Mumbai Indians made 42 for 2. Brevis showed intent and took Rahul Chahar to the cleaners hitting him for four successive sixes in his first over. Tilak Verma kept the pressure on PBKS bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, Mumbai Indians made 92 for 2.

Brevis and Verma kept the momentum going for Mumbai Indians. Vaibhav Arora missed a dropped chance at third man before Odean Smith struck getting rid of Brevis caught by Arshdeep Singh. Brevis and Verma added 84 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tilak Verma also played with positive intent keeping the scoreboard ticking while Surya Kumar Yadav struggled initially.

Mumbai Indians dealt with a big blow as Tilak Verma was run out involved in a mix-up. With the wicket of Tilak’s wicket, the second timeout was taken at 131 for 4.

Kieron Pollard looked out of form and was run out while trying to take a second run off the misfielding putting Mumbai Indians on the backfoot. Surya Kumar Yadav looked in sublime form taking on PBKS bowlers to give MI hopes of winning. Kagiso Rabada grabbed the wicket of dangerous Surya in the 19th over.

With 22 runs required to defend, Oden Smith gave 9 runs and took 3 wickets of Unadkat, Bumrah, and Tymal Mills as Punjab Kings won the match by 12 runs.

Punjab Kings 198 for 5 in 20 overs ( Dhawan 70, Agarwal 52, Thampi 2/47) beat Mumbai Indians 186 for 9 in 20 overs ( Brevis 49, Surya Kumar Yadav 43, Odean Smith 4/30) by 12 runs.

For his 52 off 32 balls and 2 catches, Mayank Agarwal was named the man of the match award.
