IPL 2022 Match 25: Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi’s brilliance stuns KKR
Sunrisers Hyderabad showed their spirit to register a comfortable victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring match played at Brabourne Stadium, CCI on Friday.
SRH captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to
field first. Aaron Finch making his debut for KKR replacing Ajiyanka Rahane showed
intent before Jansen dismissed taking the inside edge to Pooran. T Natarajan
struck off his first ball getting rid of Venetaksh Iyer with a beauty. He then
struck again dismissing Sunil Narine caught by Shashank Singh leaving KKR on
the backfoot. At the end of the first six overs, KKR made 38 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana
steadied the ship with positive strokes. Kolkata Knight Riders ended the first
timeout at 57 for 3. Umran Malik created big impact with his pace troubling the
opposition batsmen. Malik produced a stunning yorker to dismiss KKR captain Shreyas
Iyer. Shreyas and Nitish Rana added 39 runs for the 4th wicket.
Nitish Rana kept the pressure on SRH bowlers while Sheldon Jackson was
brilliantly caught by Natarajan at fine leg to leave KKR in trouble. Rana and Jackson
added 33 runs for the 5th wicket.
Nitish Rana looked confident completing his fifty off 32
balls. Andre Russell made the batting look easy with some brutal shots. At the
end of the second timeout, KKR scored 122 for 5.
Russell kept the momentum going on for KKR putting SRH bowlers
under pressure. Natarajan dismissed Nitish Rana via review. The umpire gave not
out but on review, it was overturned to out as there was an edge onto the bat. SRH
bowlers kept it tight dismissing Pat Cummins and Aman Khan. Russell took
Suchith to cleaners in the 20th over taking him for 19 runs. Thanks
to his brilliance, KKR posted 175 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 176 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for SRH
as Abishek Sharma fell without any contributions dismissed by Cummins. Rahul
Tripathi showed intent right from the word go maintain the momentum keeping
pressure on KKR bowlers. Andre Russell got rid of Williamson making life tough
for SRH. Markram and Tripathi ended the first six overs at 46 for 2.
Tripathi took the liking to Varun Chakravarthy taking him
for 18 runs in his first over. Markram looked in decent touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first timeout, SRH scored 77 for 2.
Tripathi maintained the scoring reaching his fifty off 21
balls making life-tough KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. Both Tripathi and Markram never
allowed KKR bowlers to settle. At the end of the second timeout, SRH ended at 113
for 2.
Russell got the breakthrough by dismissing Tripathi providing a simple catch to Venetaksh Iyer at long-on. Tripathi and Markram added 94 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Pooran gave most of the strike to Markram. Markram
took KKR bowlers apart with his brilliant hitting against spinners. He completed
fifty off 31 balls and completed the job for SRH ending the match with a six.
SRH won the match by 7 wickets. Markram and Pooran added unbeaten 43 runs for
the 4th wicket.
SRH 176 for 3 in 17.5 overs (Tripathi 71, Markram 68*, Russell
2/20) beat KKR 175 for 8 in 20 overs (Rana 54, Russell 49*, T Natarajan 3/39,
Malik 2/27) by 7 wickets.
For his 71 off 37 balls, Rahul Tripathi was named the man of
the match award. With this win, SRH registered their 3rd successive
win.
