IPL 2022 Match 48: PBKS thrash table toppers Gujrat Titans
Punjab Kings produced a superb performance to defeat table-toppers Gujarat Titans in a one-sided affair played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Tuesday.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and
decided to bat first. Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha began the innings
cautiously before Rishi Dhawan produced a stunning direct hit to get rid of
Gill. Saha showed intent right from the word go putting enough pressure on PBKS
bowlers. Rabada struck to get rid of Saha providing a simple catch to Mayank
Agarwal to leave GT struggling. At the end of the first six overs, GT scored 42 for
2.
Rishi Dhawan struck soon after the field restrictions
getting the wicket of GT captain Hardik Pandya with a decent catch by Jitesh
Sharma. Rahul Chahar went off the field due to an injury. Liam Livingstone bowled
his quota of overs. At the end of the first timeout, GT ended at 56 for 3.
Livingstone struck to get rid of David Miller to leave GT in
trouble. Rabada produced a sensational spell as he did not allow the GT batsmen to score runs easily. On other hand, Sai Sudharsan looked impressive putting
enough pressure on the PBKS bowlers. At the end of 2nd timeout, GT
scored 98 for 4.
Sai showed intent in keeping the momentum going for GT while the rest of the batsmen struggled with their timing due to disciplined PBKS bowling, especially
by Rabada. Sai completed fifty off 42 balls and remained not out. Gujarat
Titans posted a below-par total of 144 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing a modest total of 145 runs to win, Jonny Bairstow came
to open the innings along with Dhawan. Shami dismissed Bairstow cheaply giving a breakthrough for GT. Dhawan and Rajapaksa looked in decent touch putting the
bad deliveries away. At the end of the first six overs, Punjab Kings made 43 for 1.
Dhawan and Rajapaksa maintained the momentum for PBKS
keeping the scoreboard ticking. Rajapaksa took the attack to Sangwan hitting with
lovely strokes. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS ended at 58 for 1.
After the timeout, Dhawan and Rajapaksa looked in complete
control maintaining the momentum. Dhawan showed his class by reaching fifty off 38
balls. Lockie Ferguson got a breakthrough by dismissing Rajapaksa bowling around the
wicket. Dhawan and Rajapaksa added 87 runs for the 2nd wicket. Liam
Livingstone showed his class along with Dhawan. At the end of the second timeout,
PBKS ended at 117 for 2.
Liam Livingstone blasted away Shami for a gigantic six and
then completed the job in the same over. He and Dhawan added unbeaten 48 runs for
the 3rd wicket. Punjab Kings registered a commanding 8 wicket win.
Punjab Kings 145 for 2 in 16 overs ( Dhawan 62*, Rajapaksa
40, Livingstone 30*, Ferguson 1/29) beat Gujarat Titans 144 for 8 in 20 overs (
Sai Sudharsan 65*, Rabada 4/33) by 8 wickets.
For his figures of 4 for 33 in 4 overs, Kagiso Rabada was
named the man of the match award.
