IPL 2022 Match 51: Mumbai Indians snatch a thrilling win over Gujarat Titans
Mumbai Indians registered a remarkable win over table-toppers Gujarat Titans in a thrilling encounter played at Brabourne Stadium, CCI, Mumbai on Friday.
Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and
decided to field first. Rohit Sharma showed his form against a top-quality GT
bowling line-up along with Ishan Kishan. Both batsmen kept the momentum going
for MI putting them under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, Mumbai
Indians raced away to 63 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.
Rashid Khan produced the magic for Gujarat Titans getting
rid of Rohit Sharma. The umpire called it not out but on review, it was
overturned to out. Rohit and Ishan Kishan added 74 runs for the opening wicket.
Gujarat Titans showed their class as they took quick wickets of Surya Kumar
Yadav and then Ishan Kishan to leave Mumbai Indians in trouble. Mumbai Indians
went into the 2nd timeout at 119 for 3.
Kieron Pollard struggled to time the ball and was eventually
dismissed by Rashid Khan to leave Mumbai Indians in trouble. Tim David showed
his class with some brutal hitting along with Tilak Verma. Tilak was run-out
off a no-ball with a superb direct throw by Hardik Pandya. Tilak and Tim David
added 38 runs for the 5th wicket. Tim David provided the finishing
touches against Mohammed Shami helping Mumbai Indians post 177 for 6 in 20
overs.
Chasing 178 runs to win, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill
showed intent right from the word go keeping the scoreboard ticking right. Saha
looked in great touch hitting Jasprit Bumrah for runs. At the end of the first six
overs, Gujarat Titans made 54 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.
Saha and Gill maintained the momentum for Gujarat Titans keeping
the scoreboard ticking making life tough for Mumbai Indians. Saha completed
fifty off 34 balls while Gill reached half-century off 33 balls to keep Gujarat
Titans on course for a win. Murgun Ashwin making a comeback into XI struck
twice in the same over getting the wicket of Gill and Saha to make the match
interesting.
Sai Sudharsan looked promising putting pressure on
Mumbai Indian bowlers along with Hardik Pandya. Sai was dismissed in an unfortunate manner as he hit his own wickets deemed as hit wicket. At the end
of the second timeout, Gujarat Titans made 138 for 3.
Hardik Pandya and David Miller looked in complete control
before Ishan Kishan produced a superb direct throw to run-out GT captain Hardik
while taking a run. The match went right down the wire as Daniel Sams was given
9 runs to defend.
The finisher Rahul Tewaita was brilliantly run out with a
lovely throw by Tilak Verma and gathered by Kishan. Sams held his nerves not
allowing David Miller to hit big shots off the last 2 deliveries. Mumbai Indians
registered a thrilling 5 runs win.
Mumbai Indians 177 for 6 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 45, Tim
David 44*, Rashid Khan 2/24) beat Gujarat Titans 172 for 5 in 20 overs ( Saha
55, Gill 52, Murugan Ashwin 2/29) by 5 runs.
For his unbeaten 44 off 21 balls, Tim David was named the
man of the match award. Despite this win, Mumbai Indians remain at the bottom with
their 2nd win.
