IPL 2022 Match 52: Rajasthan Royals register a comfortable win in high scoring match

 Thanks to a brilliant batting display, Rajasthan Royals defeated Punjab Kings in a high-scoring affair played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.

Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal won the toss and decided to bat first. Jonny Bairstow struggled initially against Trent Boult and Prasidh Krishna. The hard-hitting batsmen from England showed his class putting RR bowlers under pressure especially Kuldeep Sen. R Ashwin struck immediately in his first over getting the wicket of Shikhar with a lovely one-handed catch by Jos Buttler at mid-off. At the end of the first six overs, Punjab Kings made 48 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Rajapaksa and Bairstow maintained the momentum for PBKS keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and singles. Rajapaksa looked in brilliant form taking on Chahal putting RR bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first timeout, PBKS made 56 for 1.

Rajapaksa and Bairstow did not allow RR bowlers to settle maintaining the momentum. Yuzvendra Chahal produced the trick of getting rid of Rajapaksa with a straight delivery cleaning up his stumps. Bairstow and Rajapaksa added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. Mayank Agarwal looked in decent touch showing intent against Chahal while Bairstow also looked in decent touch completing his first fifty this season off 34 balls. Chahal got the wickets of Mayank Agarwal providing a simple catch to Buttler at long-on and then dismissing Bairstow with an umpire call decision. At the end of the second timeout, PBKS made 119 for 4.

Jitesh Sharma was promoted at number 5 and produced magic showing intent to keep pressure on RR bowlers along with Liam Livingstone. Prasidh Krishna bowled around the stumps and dismantled Liam Livingstone’s stumps. Jitesh and Liam Livingstone added 50 runs for the 5th wicket. Jitesh Sharma produced the magic in the last over smashing Kuldeep Sen to help Punjab Kings post 189 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 190 runs to win, Yashavi Jaiswal making a comeback into the squad showed intent right from the word go putting pressure on Sandeep Sharma. Jos Buttler looked in sensational touch playing innovative strokes and not allowing Rabada to settle. Rabada eventually struck after being smashed 20 runs got Buttler’s wicket caught by Rajapaksa at short third man. Buttler and Jaiswal put on 46 runs in 24 balls laying a strong foundation for run-chase. Sanju Samson showed intent timing the ball brilliantly along with Jaiswal. At the end of the first six overs, RR raced away to 67 for 1.

Samson and Jaiswal kept the momentum going for RR as they ended the first timeout at 74 for 1. Rishi Dhawan provided a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Samson providing a simple catch to Shikhar. Samson and Jaiswal added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Devdutt Paddikal was sent at number 4 and struggled with his timing. On the other hand, Jaiswal showed his range against the spinners completing fifty off 33 balls. At the end of the second timeout, RR ended at 127 for 2.

Arshdeep Singh got the breakthrough by getting rid of Jaiswal with a simple catch to Livingstone. Jaiswal and Paddikal added 56 runs for the 3rd wicket. Shimron Hetymer looked in sensational touch keeping the scoreboard ticking with big shots. Arshdeep Singh bowled a brilliant 19th over including the wicket of Paddikal. Paddikal and Hetymer added 41 runs for the 4th wicket. Hetymer hit a six to release the pressure but eventually won it by 6 wickets.

Rajasthan Royals 190 for 4 in 19.4 overs ( Jaiswal 68, Hetymer 31*, Arshdeep Singh 2/29) beat Punjab Kings 189 for 5 in 20 overs ( Bairstow 56, Jitesh Sharma 38*, Chahal 3/28) by 6 wickets.

For his 68 off 41 balls, Jaiswal was named the man of the match award. Rajasthan Royals registered their 7th win so far.
