IPL 2022 Match 58: Delhi Capitals thrash RR to stay alive in the tournament
Thanks to a superb performance by Mitchell Marsh and others, Delhi Capitals showed their domination as they outplayed Rajasthan Royals played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.
Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided
to field first. It was an ideal start for DC as Chetan Sakaryia got an early
wicket dismissing the dangerous Jos Buttler providing a simple catch to Shardul
Thakur. Ravichandran Ashwin looked decent enough at number 3 while Jaiswal
struggled against disciplined DC bowling. At the end of the first six overs, Rajasthan
Royals made 43 for 1.
Mitchell Marsh ended Jaiswal’s struggling innings. Jaiswal
and Ashwin added 43 runs for the 2nd wicket. With that wicket, the first
timeout was called at 54 for 2. Ashwin intended to put some pressure on the DC bowlers while Paddikal struggled initially before scoring big shots to keep the momentum going. At the end of the second timeout, RR reached 97 for 2.
Ashwin looked in decent shape completing fifty off 37 balls.
Marsh got rid of Ashwin giving a simple catch to Warner. Ashwin and Paddikal
added 53 runs for the 2nd wicket. Anrich Nortje and Chetan Sakaryia
did not allow other RR batsmen to score runs easily and picked wickets at
regular intervals. A superb running catch by substitute Kamlesh Nagarkoti ended
the innings for Paddikal. At the end of 20 overs, Rajasthan Royals mustered 160
for 6.
Chasing 161 runs to win, Srikar Bharat was dismissed by
Trent Boult providing an easy catch to Samson without opening his account. It
could have an ideal start as RR did not review for LBW decision getting out
Mitchell Marsh. Marsh and Warner looked cautious against disciplined RR
bowling. At the end of the first six overs, DC scored 38 for 1.
Warner and Mitchell Marsh kept the momentum going for DC. Chahal
was unfortunate as the ball hit the stumps, but the bails did not fall. Delhi
Capitals ended at 54 for 1 at the end of the first timeout.
Mitchell Marsh put enough pressure on RR bowlers with big
shots not allowing the required run rate to climb. On the other hand, Warner was not
able to time rotate the strike. Marsh completed his first fifty during IPL off
38 balls. RR decided for reviewing the decision for caught behind but it remained
as not out. Delhi Capitals made 98 for 1 at the end of the 2nd timeout.
Marsh maintained the momentum for Delhi Capitals keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Chahal struck in his final over getting rid of Marsh caught
by Kuldeep Sen at the short-fine leg. Marsh and Warner added 144 runs for the 2nd
wicket. DC captain Pant made the target at ease smashing 2 sixes. Warner
completed fifty off 41 balls and helped them win the match by 8 wickets.
Delhi Capitals 161 for 2 in 18.1 overs ( Mitchell Marsh 89,
Warner 52*, Boult 1/32) beat Rajasthan Royals 160 for 6 in 20 overs ( Ashwin
50, Paddikal 48, Chetan Sakaryia 2/23) by 8 wickets.
For his 89 off 62 balls and 2 for 25 in 3 overs, Mitchell Marsh was named the man of the match award.
