Thomas Cup 2022 Day 1: Indian team blank Germany
The Indian men’s team started the Thomas Cup tournament with a dominating win over lower-ranked Germany in the opening match played at Impact Arena Court 2, Bangkok on Sunday.
Lakshya Sen making his Thomas Cup debut put enough pressure
on Max Weisskicheren before Max showed courage and made life tough for Sen. At
the mid-game interval, Max led 11-9. After the break, Lakshya did not allow his
opponent to settle with brilliant shots taking 5 successive points and maintaining
the lead till the end. The Indian won the first game easily at 21-16.
Lakshya looked sharper in the second game after the initial
lead by German. Sen dominated the play and took a commanding 11-5 lead at the
interval. After the break, it was one-way traffic as Sen was superb with his
shots winning the second game easily at 21-13 to give India a 1-0 lead.
Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Mark
Siedel and Jansen in three games. The first game saw fast exchanges between
these two pairs. Both pairs took alternate points before the Indian pair fought
strongly to take an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Satwik and
Chirag kept the momentum with strong smashes winning the first game easily at
21-15.
It was a strong start by the German pair in the second game
as they looked sharper with the Indian pair committing mistakes. Sidel and Jansen
made life tough for the opposition taking an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the
break, the German pair continued their domination winning the second game easily at
21-10 to force the game into decider.
The decider started with a close-fought affair with both
pairs taking alternate points till 9-9. Satwik and Chirag showed a great fight to
take an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian pair looked dominating
and won it by 21-12 to give India a 2-0 lead.
In the second men’s singles match, Kidambi Srikanth defeated
Kai Schafer. The Indian did not look comfortable as he committed unforced errors
before showing his true class. At the mid-game interval, Srikanth led 11-9.
After the break, the match ebbed and flowed with both players taking alternate
points before the German won the first game by 21-18.
Kidambi Srikanth showed domination in the next two games. The
Indian looked in complete control not allowing his opponent a chance to take a commanding 11-4 lead at the interval. After the break, Srikanth looked in
decent shape winning the second game easily with 21-9 to force the game into
decider.
Both players started the decider on a knife-edge before the
Indian showed domination over his opponent. Srikanth put enough pressure with
smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, the Indian led 11-8. After
the break, it was one-way traffic as the Indian never let his guard down
winning the decider by 21-11 to give India an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun defeated Geiss and Volker in the
second doubles of the day. The German pair started the first game on a good note
putting Arjun and Kapila under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Geiss and
Volker took an 11-9 lead at the interval.
After the break, MR Arjun and Kapila showed their class with
brilliant smashes putting pressure on the Germans to level the score to
14-14. It was a closely fought game as both pairs had chances to close out the
game. Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun held their nerves to win the first game at
25-23.
The second game also began with both pairs taking alternate
points till 9-9. Geiss and Volker showed their fighting spirit to take the lead
before the Indian pair again fought back strongly to level the scoring at 12-12. Dhruv
and MR Arjun upped the speed as they did not allow the German pair comeback
winning the second game easily at 21-15 to give India a 4-0 lead.
HS Prannoy did not take much time as he defeated Mark Kicklitz
in two straight games. The Indian looked in complete control putting enough
pressure on the young German. At the mid-game interval, Prannoy led 11-2. After
the break, the Indian looked in complete control winning the first game easily at 21-9.
The second game also saw the Indian showing his class, but
Kicklitz provided some fight. At the mid-game interval, Prannoy led 11-6. After
the break, it was one-way traffic as the Indian won it easily by 21-9 to give
India a 5-0 win.
It was an impressive performance by the Indian men’s team.
They would be looking to impress once again as they take on Canada tomorrow.
