England versus NZ 2nd Test 5th Day: Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes leads England to a sensational win
The England Cricket Team produced a sensational win on the final day of the 2nd Test match thanks to special knocks by Bairstow and Stokes played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Tuesday.
Starting on the overnight score of 224 for 7, Matt Henry and
Daryl Mitchell began the innings on a positive note. Henry looked solid against
the England pacers due to short ball tactics. Mitchell continued his superb
form completing fifty off 124 balls. Broad eventually struck dismissing Henry
bowling around the wickets. Henry and Mitchell added 32 runs for the 8th
wicket. Kyle Jamieson did die wondering coming at number 10 was caught by
Foakes with short ball tactics.
Trent Boult came to the crease and enjoyed himself hitting
boundaries at will against Stokes. Mitchell also played with intent keeping the
scoreboard ticking. England captain took the 2nd new ball as
Anderson ended the innings dismissing Boult caught by Stokes. Boult and Mitchell
added 35 runs for the final wicket. New Zealand set a target of 299 runs in 72
overs.
Chasing 299 runs to win, Alex Lees began off brilliantly
hitting Southee for 3 boundaries in his first over. Boult got rid of Crawley
with a lovely catch by Southee at slips. Lees looked confident with intent
hitting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first session,
England made 36 for 1.
After the lunch break, Southee dropped a chance to get rid
of Pope. Lees and Pope showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking. Matt Henry produced
peach to get the wicket of Pope. Pope and Lees added 41 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Boult got the big fish of Root with a simple return catch to leave
England on the backfoot. Bairstow struggled initially against disciplined New
Zealand bowling. Lees looked confident with his strokes putting opposition
bowlers under pressure. Southee eventually got his first wicket dismissing Lees
with a simple catch to Blundell. Lees and Bairstow added 37 runs for the 4th
wicket. Stokes showed intent along with Bairstow putting the Kiwis bowlers
under pressure. England ended the 2nd session at 138 for 4.
Bairstow showed intent right from the word go after tea
break smashing Kiwis bowlers all over the park and completing fifty off 51
balls. It was amazing hitting by both Bairstow and Stokes keeping the momentum
going on for England. Bairstow reached his century off 77 balls to keep England
on course. Stokes and Bairstow added 179 runs in quick time. Stokes struggled
with his injury and completed fifty off 55 balls. Ben Foakes also looked decent
enough while Bracewell dropped a chance. Stokes and Foakes ensured that England
chase down the target with 22 overs to spare.
England
539 in 128.2 overs (Root 176, Foakes 56, Pope 145, Boult 5/106, Bracewell 3/62)
and 299 for 5 in 50 overs (Bairstow 136, Stokes 75*, Boult 3/94) beat New
Zealand 553 in 145.3 overs (Mitchell 190, Blundell 106, Anderson 3/62, Stokes
2/85) and 224 284 in 84.4 overs (Mitchell 62*, Young 56, Conway 52, Broad 3/70,
Potts 2/32) 5 wickets
For
his 136 off 92 balls with 14 fours and 7 sixes, Bairstow was named the man of
the match award. With this win, New Zealand drops important points in the ICC Test
Championship cycle. England took a 2-0 lead in the series.
The
third and final Test match will be played from 23rd June at Headingly,
Leeds.
