FIH Pro Hockey League 2022 Women’s: Indian team lose to Belgium in a thrilling encounter
The Indian women’s team showed fighting spirit but lost to hosts Belgium in the first leg of the FIH Pro Hockey League match played at Antwerp on Saturday.
Indian team began on a good note with aggressive moves but
did not yield any results. Nelen converted a superb goal that Savita should have
stopped giving Belgium a 1-0 lead. Belgium put consistent pressure on the Indian
defense with their 2nd penalty corner but did fall on target. After a few aggressive moves by Belgium, India PC but Rani Rampal playing her 250th
match went wide off the goalpost. At the end of the first quarter, Belgium led 1-0.
It was another sloppy start to the second quarter as India
could not earn possession. Belgium was awarded another penalty corner, but the
shot went wide. The hosts kept the pressure on the Indian team with lovely play. At
the end of the first half, the scores remained 1-0 in favor of Belgium.
Belgium continued from where they left as they earned
another penalty corner. The shot went wide off the goalpost. Ambre converted
from a deflection in the 35th minute to give Belgium a 2-0 lead.
Indian team tried their best to put the hosts under pressure, but their defense
remained solid enough. Belgium maintained the pressure with another penalty corner
as Savita made a good save. At the end of the third quarter, Belgium led 2-0.
The fourth quarter saw the Indian team putting sustained
pressure. Mistake by the Belgium defense as Lalremami converted into a goal in
the 48th minute to reduce the gap to 1-2. Belgium attackers missed a
golden chance of converting as the shot hit the post. The Indian team put enough effort
into attacking play with Belgium's defense struggling for the ball. Despite all
the efforts, Belgium won the match 2-1.
With this loss, Argentina has been handed the FIH Pro
Hockey League title. Indian team looked out of sorts right throughout the match.
Both teams will feature in the second tomorrow.
