Ranji Trophy 2021/22 Quarterfinals Day 1 report
It was a great opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals with some brilliant batting performances by Mumbai and Bengal while Punjab and Karanakta struggled against disciplined bowling efforts by Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Bengal and Mumbai ended the first day in a dominating
position while Punjab and Karanakta let the good positions slip out of their
hands.
Quarterfinals 1
Bengal dominated the first day against Jharkhand Just
Cricket Academy Ground, Bengaluru. Jharkhand captain Saurabh Tiwary won the
toss and decided to field first. Abhishek Raman and captain Abhimanyu Easwaran
started on a decent note before Raman retired hurt due to an injury. Easwaran
and debutant Gharami put pressure back against Jharkhand bowlers.
Both kept the pressure on Jharkhand bowlers as Easwaran
looked impressive. Sushant Mishra eventually got breakthrough for Jharkhand
dismissing Bengal captain Easwaran. Easwaran and Gharami put on 132 runs laying
a strong foundation for a big total. The experienced Anustup Majumdar and Gharami
never allowed the Jharkhand bowlers to settle. Gharami made the batting look
easy along with Majumdar. Bengal ended the first day in a strong position at 310 for
1. Gharami is currently not out on 106 while Majumdar not out on 85.

Quarterfinals 2
The second quarterfinals between Mumbai and Uttarakhand was
delayed due to rain played at KSCA Cricket 2 Ground, Alur. Mumbai captain
Prithvi Shaw won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an aggressive start
as Shaw looked in decent touch right from word go. Dhapola castled Shaw’s stump
to end a quickfire 36 runs opening stand. Jaiswal also played with intent putting
pressure on the Uttarakhand bowlers.
Dhapola struck for the second time getting rid of Jaiswal
caught by Swapnil Singh. Arman Jaffer and Suved Parkar steadied the ship for
Mumbai putting pressure back on Uttarakhand bowlers. Dhapola struck again to
dismiss Jaffer after completing fifty. Jaffer and Parkar added 112 runs for the
3rd wicket. Sarfaraz Khan and debutant Parkar kept piling pressure
on the opposition bowlers.
Parkar completed century and not out on 104 while Sarfaraz
Khan not out on 69. Mumbai ended the first day on 304 for 3.

Quarterfinals 3
Karnataka versus Uttar Pradesh
The third quarterfinals also got delayed due to heavy rains
played at KSCA Cricket Ground, Alur. Uttar Pradesh captain Karan Sharma won the
toss and decided to field first. Mayank Agarwal and R Samarth began the
shortened first session on a good note with Samarth looking impressive while
Agarwal struggled. Karnataka ended the first session at 32 for 0 in 8 overs.
Mayank Agarwal went in an unfortunate manner as he was given
out as it did not hit anything. Agarwal and Samarth added 57 runs for the
opening wicket. Karun Nair struggled with batting against disciplined UP
bowling. Samarth completed his fifty after being stuck on 49 runs for quite a few
balls. Saurabh Kumar got rid of Samarth caught by Prince Yadav at backward
point. Shivam Mavi dismissed Karun Nair taking the inside edge onto the stumps to
leave Karanakta struggling at 97 for 3.
The left-handed Kumar kept the things tight against Pandey
and Siddharth. Karnataka ended the second session at 119 for 3. Pandey and
Siddharth showed some intent against UP bowlers. Kumar struck in two successive
deliveries dismissing Pandey caught by Jurel and then Srinivas Srinath to leave
Karanakta struggling. Pandey and Siddharth added 63 runs for the 4th
wicket. Shreyas Gopal looked confident putting Kumar under pressure with
attacking shots. Mavi struck for UP getting rid of Siddharth shattering the
stumps.
Krishnappa Gowtham could not resist the shot and was caught
at long-on by Rinku Singh. Shreyas Gopal and Vyshak stopped the flow of wickets
as bad light stopped play. Karnataka ended the first day on 213 for 7.

Quarterfinals 4
Madhya Pradesh ended the first day in a good position to
bowl out Punjab on the first day played at KSCA 3 Ground, Alur. Punjab captain
Abhishek Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first.
IPL-winning star Shubman Gill failed to contribute being
dismissed for 9 runs. Anmolpreet Singh and Abhishek Sharma looked impressive
with intent. Puneet Datey struck getting rid of Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek and
Anmolpreet Singh added 81 runs for the 2nd wicket. Madhya Pradesh
bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Anmolpreet
Singh and Sharma’s 47, Sanvir Singh made 41.
Madhya Pradesh skittled out Punjab for 219. In reply, Yash
Dubey and Himanshu Mantri played only 1 over scoring 5 runs.
